After Scrolling through here for what seems like hours I am a little more educated and a lot more confused. I recently purchased a used lower unit for my boat (we wont talk about what happened to the old one). The unit I replaced is off a 1982 60hp 2cyl Johnson on a 1982 15ft Sea Nymph, not sure on the boat weight but seems rather heavy for a 15ft boat. My old lower unit is the standard model gear-case (3.5" hub) the prop off of it is stamped with Michigan # PJ 60 I have no clue of the pitch and the prop seems to measure about 11" in diameter. My new lower unit is the larger gear-case (about 4 1/8") and did not come with a prop. other than the gear-case size all other measurements seem the same and it bolted right on. My problem is not knowing what my old prop PJ 60's pitch was I am having trouble figuring out what size and pitch i need to get for the new unit. All I am finding on this site are only 19p props that will fit that gear-case, is this pitch ok, and if I have to get a inch or two larger prop is that ok? Thank you for your time and help.

Re: Need Prop please HELP

After a little more research i found that my old prop the PJ 60 is a 12.5" 15p prop. The smallest 15P prop i can find is a 13.5" that will fit the larger hub i think this will work i am just worried if it will hit the anti vent plate or not.

Don't worry about the diameter as long as it fits the larger gearecase,it is a function of the design.Your motor may respond better to a 13.5 than say a 14.The larger gearcase may have a different gear ratio;so the 15" pitch may not be right.you will need to test and tell us details of the boat, length, width, weight and your rpm and speed. You could also find the gear ratio by removing the plugs and turning the motor and note the prop rotation in relation to one revolution of the power head.
