I see a prop on ebay I'm interested in to replace my damaged one. However I'm a little confused.

First off I have a: 1973, 135hp Evenrude outboard on a 1973 16' Rienell trihull.
My current prop is 13-1/4 x 17.

Checking on Michigan Wheel's web site it shows that I should get either a 13-1/4 x 19 or a 13 x 19

I checked the general FAQ on this forum and it seems the article on that FAQ is missing.

So, anyone able to tell me what is OEM on this or what size I should replace with?

I'm hoping to use this mostly for skiing, wakeboarding, and some just cruising on the lake.

Thank you!

Ted

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

PS. If I buy a prop made for Johnson/Evenrude motors of the same length and pitch, is there anything more I need to look at to make sure I'll get the right replacement?

E-mail him quick for the numbers off the prop and then you will know for sure. Also, count the splines on your propshaft. Easier to count the grooves.

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

Hiya,

It looks like it should work. If you choose a 19-22' boat when doing the prop search thing with your motor on the michigan wheel site, it suggests a 17" pitch and the part # it lists is the same as the one that can be made out in the digital photo from the auction... that tells me it'll probably fit on your motor. The bigger question is whether a 17" pitch is optimal for your rig. Were you happy with the performance of your old prop before you damaged it? If you're low in pitch you'll get good jump out of the hole (good for skiing), but you might be over-reving it if running WOT with a light light load in the boat. Of course, you can always just watch the tach and not allow it to over-rev.

It could be that your boat (trihull) is heavier than whatever weight they're assuming on the prop selector tool, and a 17" would be the right pitch. (?)

Ah, ebay.... worst case is that you buy it, and if it turns out not to be what you want, re-sell it on ebay! So, let the sniping begin! ;)

Brent

Never Mind, it will fit. Number 013077 and it matches your motor on the prop selector. I don't know much about that prop. But stainless has got to be better than aluminum. Your motor according to the prop selector calls for a 19" prop, but if the boat is heavy, a 17" should work fine.

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

Thanks a million guys! Actually I recently baught the boat with the damaged prop, so I don't know if it was ideal before that or not :(

Are you saying that a 17 instead of 19 will pull a skiier up faster? I never noticed the engine over revving. The prop is damaged but not unusable. I'll still use it as a spare. The former owner thought my motor was a 125 hp so maybe this is a prop based on that!

I only get 34 miles per hour and it seems like I could get better! Maybe a 19 prop would do that?

You should be closer to 40 MPH with that boat and motor combo. A 19" may be better and give you more top end, but the 17" will definetely pull a skier better for sure. You could always have it re-pitched to a 19" by a prop shop...

BTW it looks like I can see a lot of rust when I look at the picture of the instide of the prop. Is that possible? 31 min and counting . . .

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

yes, a 17" will pull a skier up quicker than a 19". It allows the engine to make rev's quicker and will make the holeshot quicker. You lose top speed, burn a bit more gas and have the potential danger of over-reving at WOT... but if skiing and cruising at mid-throttle settings is your main thing, then it's not too much of a compromise. I have a 16.5' ski boat with V6 150 merc... run an aluminum 19" pitch. For my rig, it's the optimal pitch. Boat literally jumps on plane, yet runs right at the max of the rpm range with WOT and some trim. I'd get a few more mph with a 21", but anything over 50 mph is fast enough for me, so I'm keeping it with a 19.

You know you can get aluminum props rebuilt right? A "prop shop" or welding shop that does them can pretty much get it as good as new. Depends where you are and the shop but cost would probably be under $100 if the hub is OK. A stainless for $100 doesn't look bad either.

good luck.

Brent

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

Not to worry about that. Just some surface rust on the inside of the prop. It will blow off the first time you use it. It may have been sitting for a while..

Great. Lot's of useful stuff you guys gave! Yes, I could get my prop fixed, but I don't have a spare right now, so I thought I'd better get one. This way I get to upgrade at the same time :)

Re: Need quick answer on prop size please

Not to be a naysayer, but a seller with a new ebay account with no feedback doesn't give me warm fuzzies. Did he just ditch a previous ebay handle and its negative feedbacks?? I've bought my share of stuff there, but am always concerned about the scam artists.

If you'd survive even if it turns out to be "to good to be true" then go for it.

Brent

Thanks BF. I know what you mean. I get the same feeling, especially since he doesn't list like an e-bay newbie. Think I'll take the risk this time though. Haven't had any troubles on e-bay yet (knock on wood).

If you use paypal, you're covered up to $100.00. Plus, he does appear to offer shipping insurance.
