Hi,
I am looking for a VHF radio for my 19" bayliner for mostly near shore boating fishing. What would you recommend for a decent one for less than $200? I'm checking the Uniden UM525 or Oceanus. are they any good? What about antenna? Is Shakespeare 5101 any good?
Thanks in advance

Re: Need recommendation for a decent VHF radio

It hard to buy a bad radio Today. Make sure it has all the features your want.
Does it have a PA, or Fog HORN signal, or a listen back feature. Today make sure it has DSC and connections to a GPS. All new radios must have DSC.

I like ICOM but I think Uniden is also good.

Antenna 5101 looks like a decent antenna. It has a brass and copper element so should hold up pretty good. The base is chrome plated brass and it uses the higher loss RG58 coax.

My Favorite is the Galaxy 5225-XT. The base is Stainless Steel and uses lower loss RG8X coax but does cost more.

If money no problem then go with a ICOM radio of your choice and Sakespeare 5225 XT antenna. Also buy a Gold PL259 for the radio connection.

Icom or Standard Horizon are my choices. I have the Icom M302 myself.
My research told me Icom was the top rated by most.
Iboats mega mall has the "Digital" brand antennas. They are high quality. Shakespere Galaxy antennas are good. I been told to stay away from their cheaper ones. Most say the highest quality should be placed on the antenna and sacrifice on the radio if cost is considered.

I have the Oceanus and I coupled it with the Galaxy 5225 XT ant. Very good set up for a very reasonable price. Radio was 139 and antenna was 105.
