Sorry to the mods if this should've been posted in the electronics section.

My son has just started driving a big rig and is in need of a GPS. His employer does not provide a unit.

I'll just confuse myself by looking at Google and the 20 million reviews listed there.

What would y'all recommend that he look at for an easy to use, user friendly unit that won't get him stuck under an over pass?

I'm very happy with my TomTom with the truckers map. :)

It has everything on it that a trucker needs.

Plus it talks to you so there's no need to take your eyes off the road.

Heres a sample pic.

Maybe it was user error but my Tom Tom rarely worked in the 8 months I had it before the screen cracked while my wife was trying to program something into it.

You need to update the map as soon as you take it out of the box. :)

It comes with free lifetime regular map updates.

before the screen cracked while my wife was trying to program something into it.

How hard did the wife punch/touch the screen ??.

I barely have to touch mine. :)

My son just got a Tom Tom & loves it, but I don't know if he has tried any updates yet. Can't say for myself, I still use maps!

Garmin with lifetime updates...Not even a question.

I've got a friend who's a Owner/operator does alot of long distance hauling. He had one of the Rand McNally units which cost him twice as much but had problems with it so he went back to Garmin.

I have a TomTom which has worked well enough but I went to update it and they want $79.95 + tax. Forget that! Garmin Nuvi here I come.

Send me that no good updating TomTom. :)

Hmmm, you either know something I don't OR you don't mind getting lost and confused. I was in Penn. earlier this summer and we were in a blinding rain storm, in the dark, trying to get back to the hotel from our daughters house. Seems we were on a section of Fwy that was built after the map date. It kept telling us to turn left as we sailed past the offramp that we should have taken. After missing that offramp the TomTom kept furiously recalculating as it showed new turns that did not exist. Soon we were driving across blank space on the screen. Only when I finally got of the Fwy and back on to the surface streets did the TomTom finally get us back to the hotel.

Re: Need recommendation for GPS unit for truck

The older Tom Toms didn't have free lifetime maps but the newer ones do. Keep in mind that there are only 2 map providers and they supply maps to all the GPS companies. It's not unusual to lose sattelite signal in a heavy rain storm so it's tough to blame that on a particular brand. I'm not necessarily defending one comany ot the other, just saying that there are going to be some things that are common to all brands. You'll get a better receiver and more features with the more expensive models than you will with the economy models. Built in memory and the ability to add a memory card are also going to be features of the higher end models. Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

I've been eyeballing this unit.

I'll have to wait and see what the son thinks about it. His birthday is the 16th of this month.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
