I have a '80 OMC 800 Ball gear that I am trying to get the nut off of so I can use a puller to pull the gear...

I have used a impact wrench on it (both sides) for a couple hours now at 120 psi and neither won't budge.

I have applied heat/water/heat/water a few times, but I have not pulled the entire assembly yet, I was hopeing I wouldn't have to.

Any suggestions on how to get the nut off other than few choice words and ages of pounding on it?

Center punch 2 spots 180? apart, use a drill small enough so as to not damage the threads but large enough to cut through most of the nut. Then apply impact once more, it should come off in 2 pieces. There's new ones in the kit.

After you have gone to the time and trouble to remove the ball gears without pulling the shafts and bearing caps (like you are supposed to), what are you planning to do about the seals on the upper and intermediate units you just toasted by the heat??

wire2, that worked wonderfuly. I drilled a hole in the nut that almost split the nut in two. I was able to just remove the nut with almost my fingers. Didn't need the impact wrench at all. See. You guys are just d@mn good.

I did get the complete ball kit, I am going to replace all the bearing/seals them all. The nuts holding the plate behind the ball gear are old and soft. I wanted better access to them so I didn't twist them off. (Like I did else wheres and now I have to drill and retap)

I am doing a complete seal kit on it all. Upper/lower/ball etc. I got the whole sharbang. (4 kits worth probably some 60 seals? *groan*)

Oil looks good in all locations, but I had a couple thousand leaks in the upper, So I figured while I am in there, just time to replace all the seals, impeller, oil etc. It should give me a couple more years of service with out any problems.

TUNEUP TIME!

Hey btw, in the gear case, the oil that services the ball gear bearings, what and how much oil do I need? (freaken manual didn't show with the parts and is backordered)

Glad to hear the drill worked for you. I believe you probably made it tighter with the heat/cool cycles, that shrinks steel.

As I recall, I used close to 2 quarts gear oil to replace it in all 3 cases.

The upper one is finicky, you'll pump & pump and not see it on the dipstick, and suddenly its flowing out the top. The dipstick area is very small diameter, so it rises fast when you get there.

The tilt gear uses common 30 weight motor oil.
