I have 3 boat motors: 1960? 3hp lightwin 3034-10803, 3hp gamefisher 298-586192, 5hp ted williams 217-58610. 106107.

All of them run. Which one would be the most reliable and have parts available if needed. I have been told the lightwin still has parts and would be the best one. My concern with that is it also seems to me to have the more complex issues with it. The others seem to be as simple as a weed eater or lawnmower.

Am I correct in this assumption or am I looking at it wrong???

The lightwin is also the simplest of the 3, unless a water pump scares you.

I've run a 3HP Tanaka for 25+years and it's very light, dependable, centrifugal clutch for shallow water, air cooled(no water pump), run it on a 17" canoe. Great little motor, especially for shallow water fishing! Can't really say about the others.

Re: Need some advice

Thanks for all the advice. I guess the lightwin scares me a little, it may be because all I had to do when I bought it was put gas in it. The guy I got it from was the son of original owner and never used it 15+ yrs. I guess I got lucky.

It sounds like maintenance is not that bad? I have worked on all my others but again they are pretty basic. Any tips on any maintenance to do on it??

Re: Need some advice

if it starts easily, runs well, all i would do(just to be safe) is replace the impeller, drain and replace the gearcase oil.....and enjoy! (keep an eye on the gear oil tho)
