Need some dissassembly advice for a 1990 115 Merc

I need to replace the lower bearing on my swivel bracket on my 1990 115 Merc (OC272122) with power trim. I have removed the motor from the transom and I thought that removing 4 mounting bolts (upper and lower mounts) would allow me to remove the swivel bracket, BUT there is that upper shift shaft that runs through the swivel pin and steering arm assembly that is going to prevent the swivel bracket assembly from coming away from the motor.

My question is, how much do I need to disassemble to remove swivel bracket assembly? Has anyone else had experience in removing the swivel racket? I don't want to take apart more than I have to.

Thanks for the help.

Don't understand what you mean by lower bearing on the swivel bracket unless you are referring to the bushings which are installed before the grease seals.

However, your engine is a model:

1115412JD MERCURY 1990 115

Parts Listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/359.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-13645-2

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/13645_2/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Yes, I meant the lower bushing (#3 in the Merc manual). What do you have to take apart to replace this bushing? I can't even figure out how to get the upper shift shaft (#24) out. The manual I am refering to is the Merc Manual, section 5b.

Thanks for the help.

I happen to be rebuilding a 1991. Here in these pictures you'll see the mid section and the shift shaft. I lifted it up a few inches so you could see it. I do believe you are going to have to pull the power head. Not too hard a job. You can see how I did it in my rebuild thread. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=530605 or "91 Mercury 115 Rebuild - Let's see how it goes!"

thanks for the pics. I did not want to disaasemble more than I had to, but I suspected that I would have to remove the power head. I am going to be following your rebuild with great interest. Love the pictures.

Anthony;

Sorry I did not get back to you last night. Before you remove the powerhead, have you determined that the lower bushing is actually worn? That is, can you see the swivel pin moving in the lower part of the housing or is it the complete Swivel Bracket and Steering Arm
assy that is loose?

The swivel pin moves inside the swivel bracket. When the motor is tilted and I grab the lower unit you can see the play when you lift the unit upwards. The bottom yoke is tight to the swivel pin. When I bought the boat and motor used last year I did notice the retaining ring (#21) lying on the drive shaft housing and did not think anything of it. I wonder if the bushing came out and was not replaced.

For anyone following this post

Thanks to Gerry, yes pulling the powerhead was the way to go. It was easy, 8 nuts and off it came. Would never have been able to disassemble the swivel bracket assembly without removing the power head. What I did find out is that the bottom bushing had spun in the swivel bracket. But that is another problem.
