Re: need some help on new foam, stringers, and deck

Oops, when talking about all of these layers, are we talking about the stringers or the deck. i was thinking of one layer on the stringers and several (3) layers on the deck...

1. or do i need 3 layers on the stringers too?

Lars, thanks for the picture; it helped me understand.

2. also, need help on what the 350er mat is...? I stopped by my local boaters world to look at the products. They basically have 2 things, a roll of thick mat, and a roll of cloth. got a picture of link to the mat so i can make sure i understand exactly what it is?

when i read a description of the difference on boatersworld website, it says mat is nonwoven and cloth is woven...

so what is the 350er, and is there a good place on the internet to get it?

3. what thickness of plywood do you all recommed?

again, thanks for all the help, i could not do this by myself

pic 46 is where side of boat and transom meet

pics 50 and 51 are looking down at transom and you can see were the rotten wood is sandwiched in there.

how am i supposed to get the transom apart to replace rotton wood?

so now that you see what im dealing with...reccomendations?

Well that looks like mine !!! lol you got to pop the top off , check under the top and see where , if any , it is glassed to the bottom cut it , I had to get the bottle jack out and very slowly and carfully pop it up then i just proped some 2x4 under to hold it up , or you can take the hole thing off thats going to take you building a a rig to hold it while you wheel it out from under neath !! I think it was Redfury that has some pics of one !!! heres a pic of what I did

thanks john,

so when you put the stringers in,
1.are you going to use the mat or cloth on the links from us composits that i posted above and what weight?
2. how many layers on the stringers?
3. are you going to use polyester resin?
4. what thickness of plywood?

for the deck:
1. mat or cloth like in the us composits links? weight?
2. how many layers?
3. what thickness of plywood

for the transom:
same questions

Amen on sealing the raw wood. My first choice from a performance standpoint would be epoxy. If I were using polyester resin on the rest of the boat that is most likely what I would end up using. As mentioned above, thin it well. Thin whatever you use. I would have it very thin on my first coat of two and then back off the thinner. Another good sealer is polyurethane. Again, thin it as stated above.

I just updated my supplie list check it out http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1612765&posted=1#post1612765
I am going with epoxy , its more expensive but I have faith in it , I know it sticks to everything , really well , it stress well , and it has 3 or 4000 psi so if the boat falls apart around me I know the transom and the stringers well stay together!!! hahaha see me out ther holding a gas can riding on my 3 stringers and the transom back in !!!! hahahaha coarce if it was oops you would have a bunch of ping poog balls to float on !!!1 hahahahahahhahaaha sorry ooops !!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking matt, 8.5 twill weave glass, matt , 10oz eglass then if i have any thing left one more layer of matt
and 1/2 ext-plywood and dont forget about the foam !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol John

Re: need some help on new foam, stringers, and deck

hi kenny

i see you are in the capeable hands of my bud john....look at all of his thread.......its good....

ok...here we go......

all i boaters......remember...this is only one way to rebuild a boat....there is many.....

it is also assuming poly will be used.....poly is what your boat is made of...so we know it is strong enough......and it works.....(epoxy is very strong...stronger than poly...but thats another matter)

ok......

wood for stringers....i used well dryed 3/4 inch pressure treated ply wood...
you can also use 3/4 inch exterior ply wood....in fact...one of i boats top restorers....tashasdaddy....far prefers exterior plywood.
so its your choice.

as far as my earlier post about glassing i was refering to the stringers....
you lay the matt first....that way all the little glass hairs join very well to the wood...better than cloth (cause of the hairs...and more)

lay the matt all the way over the stringer and on to the hull 4 inches away from the stringer.....

then you add the cloth...it gives stregnth to the matt....
lay the cloth 2 inches past the end of the mat , where the matt touches the hull....this is called overlap...

then add a layer of matt again....using a 2 inch overlap......

the lighter matt is ok...1.5 oz......

the cloth ....what was it? 8.5 oz.....?

larrs is in germany...so he was giving weights in metric...350 grams. (i think) could have been milli grams. or mg's.

hope that clears some stuff up......

but as johnny said....ya gots a ways to go first bud.

over the easter weekend....i will be glassing in my stringers..(i hope).. i will give very detailed photographs and step by step narration on how i did mine....that will be posted long before you do yours......

but you should read that skanky beast thread........its perfect !

cheers bud

thanks for the detailed answer. i think i understand now. i did not realize that the stringers need 3 coats of glass.

i live in tennessee, the only place i have found local that carries a substational amount of mat and cloth is boaters world. are there any online places that carry mat or cloth for a good price?

when i cut the deck out, do i need to cut it out completely all the way to where the sides of the hull come down? (where the deck and hull meet around the 90 degree angle)

i will be looking forward to your pics of your stringer rebuild. im usre you will be done well before me as the wife has some other projects for me to to work on

Re: need some help on new foam, stringers, and deck

the deck hull joint...is where the deck meets the hull...there is a small layer of fiberglass there......be very careful with the grinder.....dont go thru the hull....but cut the glass holding the deck to the boat......

i cut some of the floor out....for inspection...after i knew the whole thing had to come out.....i cut the joint...and pulled.....ripped...swore..and cussed....but out it came.....

as far as glass places....try the links john gave you.....

look in your local phone book...for fiberglass materials....ill bet there is a few....i live in a town of 150 thou and we got 4......use unwaxed resin for the layups and waxed for the deck covering.....

erik g pulled a neat trick and bought scrap fiberglass off e-bay...pm him and get the details....he didnt pay very much.......

the thicker the cloth....(again cloth is a generic term)..the more resin it will drink.....so you will have to buy lots of resin....i m doin somthing ...uh...that requires lots of glass and im goin on 30 gallons of resin !...you wont need that much........for more detailed info on fiberglassing check out the hull extension thread......

cheers bud

Re: need some help on new foam, stringers, and deck

seriously, thanks so much for your time!

I know it will be a little while before i get to this point, but question about putting the deck in:

how many pieces should i try to do the deck in? i know pieces of plywood are going to be much easier in several smaller pieces (to install) than like 2 larger pieces for the whole deck. are several smaller pieces going to be as strong as largers pieces?

Hi Kenny,

try to use as large pieces as possible. You have to join the pieces, see the pic...
Besides using the screws you should glue the woods pieces with resin extra.

Great thread! This one of the most condensed and abundant sources of knowledgable builders I have come across so far.
