I have a 1994 bayliner with a 3.0 merc I have changed the fuel filter that goes into the carb but not the one inside the pump. The problem I am having is that after about 2 hours of cruising and pulling the kids around the lake the boats seems to sputering at around 3000-3500 rpms if i back off it runs ok . What do you think this could be ? I have had it out maybe about 15 times this year run great uptil the last few times . I have changed the thermostat last weekend fixed the overheating problem . After I changed the little fuel filter the boat ran great for a few days. I have always toped off the gas since the first time out could it be bad fuel ? I say that because we never use more then a half a tank aday. Water in the gas ? I tested the carb and it shoots gas out of the jets . My spark plug are abit black on the tips could it be running to rich? Thanks for the help Jay

Re: Need some help please !!!

i have a 1995 3.0 and just had to add the merc fuel water sepator that installs on the intake of the fuel pump it seams to have solved my problem which sounds exactly like yours i guess after 9 years enough water has built up in the tank to start being drawn in by the fuel pump. in NY we have had a 10% Alcohol blend for a while which sucks in a lot more water than 100% gas
i have also had the carb filter clog up enough to run the motor so lean that it heated up from 150 to 170 deg at which point i shut it down and put in a spare and the temp went back to normal that was when i saw the wisdom of installing the real filter

tommays

Someone just told me it could be vapor lock running to lean at higher rpm's . Does that sound like that is what it could be .

I go with fuel filter.
Think about it, you changed that little semi worthless one out, and it ran better for a few days then began acting up again.....see any cause and effect scenario going on here?
Change that little filter again, buy a real cannister filter and install it, and dump some Berryman's B-12 in your gas tank.
