Need some help with my Javelin!

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and I am new to boating.
I just bought a 1992 Javelin 353B bass boat with a 1992 70hp 2 stroke Johnson.
The boat and motor works runs fine.
The problem is the steering reel seems to be really tight and quite hard to turn. I have tried putting grease at the place where you suppose to put it (the nipple). But it's still really stiff and hard to steer. So I am just wondering if that's normal or is there anything I can do about it to make it more smooth?

Another question is regarding the speed I am getting.
My boat is 15.25 feet long and 74 inches wide. I am apparently getting top speed of 34 mph reaching 5500RPM with 3 batteries, full tank of fuel (45L), fishing gears, and 2 person on board. The prop is 13x17 aluminum. Is that the max performance/speed I can get? or is there any way I can increase the speed without damaging the motor?

All your opinions and advises will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jackie

Welcome to iboats.

I would disconnect the motor and then try the steering. It is good to isolate where the exact problem is.

You are about maxed for speed on your hull.

That fitting is only to grease the shaft that goes thru the tilt tube. If you have the steering cable extended and put very much grease there it will go in to the cable and that is very bad.

Thanks for the info Bob_VT.
So I guess I should just take it apart and clean up the tube or something and then re-lube the steering with grease.

Also, you mentioned that my boat is about maxed out for the speed, so does that mean there is no way to make it run any faster? would changing the prop work?

Thanks,
Jackie
