Hi all. I blew a rod bearing on a dated car motor and am updating to a new long block from Rapido. Should I be using a gasket sealer or anything on the new gaskets I have to install? What else should I make sure I do and definitely not do. I assume I can put everything on the motor and then lower it in on a 1999 startcraft.

I agree with running it before you put it in the boat, but please, not on the stand. Block it up on the floor to run it. it amazes me that some of the engine stands even hold the engine, let alone with it running.

Here is a link to download the service manual that would cover a 99 Mercruiser V6. http://www.4shared.com/office/--BPNit1/25__GM_V6_43_98-.html? read it carefully. Section 3 covers the engine.

i would say the most important thing to due would be to prime the oiling system before startup. if you have a pressure system to do this thats great if not you can use a drill and a cut off flat head screw driver. you just need the screwdriver to be long enough to reach the oil pump drive shaft. you can even do it just by hand with the screw driver. this is easiest to do before you install the intake. i use ultra black permatex on all fiber and cork gaskets, 3m weatherstrip adhesive on rubber. nothing on the intake except for some hightack or ultra black at the water crossovers. if you've never done it before i would seriously think of finding someone who has or watching as many youtube videos you can before you attempt it. your gonna have a bundle of coin and time invested in it and there are many small tricks to make the install better and last longer...

Thanks for all the tips. The guy helping me has some experience. When running it on blocks what do I need to make sure everything is working correctly. Is there anything that you don't put back on the motor to test it? I'll download the manual for sure thanks Don.

I shared a lot of tips in my 4.3l engine build up thread

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=520824

As far as ground testing the motor... I just had mine sitting on blocks, but still somewhat supported by my cherry picker, which kept it from twisting or anything. You just need to hook up fuel, battery, a hose on trickle into the water intake hose, and then run a jumper wire from where the battery hooks up to the starter to the positive side of the coil. Then you can jumper the solenoid circuit to start it.

Thanks for all the input. Do those exhauset manifold gaskets, mine are shaped with little hooks around the bolts, have to have quite a bit of high temp gasket maker on them? I will be posting back this week when we get started. I'm sure I'll have more questions. I was looking through the service manual. Any tips for aligning the motor with drive? Nice job Struc. I enjoyed all the pictures and your progress. Very informative and the pictures will help a bunch because I didn't think to take the pictures before tearing it down. Mine is a 99 and if you have any more pictures handy (like top views etc) that would be great. Maybe the service manual shows where everything is placed?

I wouldn't be worried about that right now thats probably one of the last things to do. but a heads up would be you need an alignment bar to line up the rear engine coupler to the outdrive gimball bearing. it's not a bad job at all.
