Did Evinrude ever produce a 4 cylinder 50 horse in 1965. I know someone who claims to own one. If they did not then what does he own? I've never heard of a 4 cylinder in this low of a hp rating. I'm just curious.

Hi SGD,
Actually, in the 1940s, Evinrude built a 5.4hp opposed four-cylinder! That's right! A whopping 5-point-4 horses! They also built 9.2, 9.7, 16.2, etc. up to 33.4hp opposed 4-cylinders, plus a monster racer called the 4-60 (four cylinders, 60-cubic inches).
To answer your question, the 50hp V4 was built in 1958 and 1959.
- Scott

If you can give us the model number, we can tell you what it is... After the 59' model, it looks like it skips to a 71 year model...

Re: Need some input on the validity of a motor

SGD, I owned a 1959 and a 1958 4 cylinder Johnson 50 HP outboard. They were 70.7 cu inch monsters. They were very reliable, but required frequent maintenance/adjustment to the carb and points. I liked them because they would always bring you home, but used much fuel and did not have too much top speed. The hole shot was very good and they developed power at low RPM allowing them to plane a boat at a slow speed. I saw a reprint of an article where OMC did a reliability test. Twin '59 50s pushed a 21 foot boat from the US to England. It was 4500 miles and the burned 1500 gal of fuel each. (A tanker followed them)

I remember the first 50 HP motor I ever saw back in the 50's. It was a big, fat Johnson-- the biggest motor I'd ever seen up to that time.
