Re: Need some OMC help

SBG: I have the same unit in my boat, circa 1975. Just ordered an impeller kit myself and have it right here in my lap! It's a Sierra part # 18-3286 Impeller Repair Kit, Replaces OMC 379475 fits 100hp and up 1964-86 except Cobra.

Since you're a fellow Canuck, go here: http://www.marinemanifold.com/

I have got new manifold elbows, some misc. engine parts, the impeller kit and a set of Smart tabs SX all through them. You can get online quotes, and they are great to deal with.

It sounds like your boat is similar in size to mine. I would recomend looking at the smart tabs for yours too. Those V8's make 'em sit low in the rear and give horrible bow rise getting onto plane.

Have fun with yer white anchor! And don't pay any attention to those Rube Goldberg deciples telling you to get a Merc. :D:D

Re: Need some OMC help

Thanks for the site NW Redneck ;)

Ok I have the sterndrive apart, took out the 4 bolts for the upper gear box and can't get the gear box to come off. Am I missing something, or is it stuck? Was doing good till this and then the massive rain hit. lol.

I can see that the previous impeller was shredded as the bolts were covered in rubber.

Any help would sure be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

It may just be stuck. Try giving it a couple of taps with a plastic faced hammer or wooden mallet.

Okay I got it all apart and as you can see by the photo it was so badly damaged that I can't make heads or tails of the parts.

So what's wrong with it? :D

Not having done mine yet, I'm not 100% sure of all the parts.

I'm not sure how well you will be able to see these, but here's some (crappy) pics from my Glenns manual.

Hope they help!

Re: Need some OMC help

That is awesome! Thank you so much. The kit I got replaces 3 part numbers and there are some extra pieces that was not in what I took out, but the impeller was so badly damaged that I could not make heads or tails out of what was in that molten pile of rubber.

This should allow me to get it back together this morning. Thanks so much NW Redneck!

Re: Need some OMC help

Thanks for all the help everyone! I got her out on the water last night for the initial test run and could not be happier, well a little. NW Redneck you are so right about the back end of that boat. It takes some time to come on plain and the bow is right up in the air, whick is really cool till you realize you have no idea where you are going. She topped out at 62 kph with 2 people and 65 kph with one. I pretty happy with that for the moment.

I think I will take your advice on the trim tabs. Anyone ever try one of the those stingrays on something like this? The same as trim tabs, or work well with them?

My question is now how to get more power out of the OMC 175? What motor is it? I am sure a tune up will do wonders, since I have no history on this motor at all. Any thoughts?

Re: Need some OMC help

You're going to need to get a manual. Find a factory one as the aftermarket ones (like my Glenns) are not the best, although they are better than nothing. Look on Ebay.

The motor is a Ford 302. The 190 is the same engine as the 175 but with a different cam and carb IIRC. That may be a possibility if you are really not satisfied with your current HP, and are willing to spend the time and $$$.

As far as the stingrays/foils go, do a little searching around the site and you will find lots of threads about the pros and cons. The general consensus is the tabs give far superior performance for not much more $$. And you don't have to drill into your outdrive. I had one many moons ago on an old 'Rude 65hp O/B on an old 16' runabout. It did work somewhat, but I wouldn't put one on anything I cared alot about!

Re: Need some OMC help

Great stuff NW Redneck. Many thanks! I just found out that my boat is 16ft instead of the 18 that the previous owner told me. lol. It sure looked bigger than my last 16. I think I am going to with trim/smart tabs, as you suggested. On that site you sent me I don't see a match to my size and hp. Could I use the ones for the 17' on mine, as they match the hp rating?

Re: Need some OMC help

The first 2 pics are from an original OMC owners manual. It's just a small booklet that gives basic service info and specs. A good shop manual is still a necessity if you need to do any repairs.

I have the 80# actuators on mine, and it looks like I'll end up with them on the lowest setting (hole closest to the transom). You will probably want the 60# ones as your boat is smaller than mine. Even if you find you need different ones, the people at Nauticus are excellent at making sure you are satisfied and will exchange actuators for you if you find the ones you have are wrong.

I've always heard the elec is a bear to rebuild any input on that also. thanks

Re: Need help bad putting Impeller back together

Re: Need help bad putting Impeller back together

I am really surprised that no-one has recommended a SERVICE MANUAL.....even a clymer or seloc manual is better than none........get yourself a manual....the job will be much easier.....and, the job will be done correctly........not really sure how similar this drive is to my 800 series, but, there are a couple of things that are important to do when replacing on of these impellers....and you will never know unless a manual is read... so do yourself a favor and purchase a manual...everyone will be willing to help with any questions later.....and a good source for parts is http://www.sterndrive.info/
