Need to replace my sunpad hinges. Last owner just kept adding screws and it is a mess. All the holes are too big and the cover will not stay put.
Is there a product I can fill in the screw holes in the fiberglass and then redrill?
Thanks

Over size drill the holes then fill with Marine Tex. Then Redrill to size.

If you access to the back side you can through bolt. Or if the holes are in a solid core you can epoxy dowels in place and screw in to them.

Hello m8..

Only 2 ways I can think of..

1. The Drewpsters way.. Can you access the other side of the fasteners ? if so then through bolt like Drewp said. ( recommended way )

2. If you cant get to the back side of the screws ( can you even if it ment drilling a little bit more ? ) then your going to have to pilot drill the holes oversized..then die grind the exposed holes..then pack the livving bejesus with glass filer..let cure then predrill and fasten with screws with 3m 4200.. ( hand tighten please :) ) .

YD.

Re: Need some thing to fill holes and drill

I will have to look and see if you can get behind or not. I know the hinges have 12 holes, not that I would have to use all of them. The previous owner must have drilled and put in (I kid you not) 20 extra holes and screws. It looks like a war zone, I will have to get apicture....anyway 4 winns emailed me back and gave the part number to get new hinges......I will also have to take off the sunpad and use wood filler to fill in the honey comb they created....

If they shoved that many screws in to it trying to get it to tighten up then it has been an on going problem. I recommend you repair the area completely and back it with some light ply when you reinstall the hinge. Even then I would through bolt it. The concern is that the area is weak with all those holes and may crack IF you get the hinge secured.

Wood filler is for wood.
Use the MarineTex as suggested.

Great idea fishbone. I am going to pull it apart and look at it this weekend. It seemed instead of fixing the problem right, they just kept adding screws.....

I email 4 winns from there website, and the next day they set me the part numbers to order the hinges....was very impressed!

being a canadian........you guys are all work a holics.....throw the hinge out and just use duct tape.

it will seal the holes and make a great hinge !:D

i personally think the wood backing strip that the screws are going in to is rot

Hi Guys:

I'm with oops on this. I would only agree with him though, if you can color code the duct tape. You wouldn't want it to look silly, eh?

I would remove the swiss cheesed wood and bond a new peice in, then glass over it. Then duct tape.:)

Re: Need some thing to fill holes and drill

Get some aluminum strip underneath and drill and tap your screws into that...sandwich the glass inbetween that and the hinge...not going to come off again, nor rot. Use SS screws though, otherwise you'll end up with rusted out screws.
