Any suggestions for speakers for the boat? Obviously weather-proofing is of concern, as well as great sound. Can anyone recommend a brand that they are happy with? Thanks!

I have a clarion system with tape and 12 cd changer. picked it up new for $129 on one of the known auction sites. Since they do not like spam, if you want the auction site, just email me.

Hans007

Hi Kristen,
I recently bought a set of KLH external box speakers (waterproof) from bestbuy on sale for $20. They are great speakers.
I also installed a Pioneer car stereo with a waterproof cover I bought at the boatshop for $14.

What kind of boat you have? Do you plan on putting the radio out with a waterproof cover? I have a little-- well had. a cuddy, so I just purchase a simple radio at walmart with a CD Input in the front. Ofcourse got 2 speakers. Nothing loud. just enuff to listen within the boat -- What I did was got a portable MP3 player. It plays mp3, cd, cdr. I have one cd. IT holds 140 songs.

Just a thoughful suggestion. You can get a portable cd walkman mounting kit and mount it within your reach on the helm. And when you are done. Just unhook the player. and everything is out of the weather.

You can get a cd player and just get a cover. But a cd only holds 10-15 songs. IF thats good enuff for you. Than great. But the wave of the future is MP3. One disk 140 songs. With a remote control. You wont have to get up to change those cds no more.

think about it.

I put some 6in pioneer's in my boat which were water resistant and had them mounted in boxes under the console's. Bose makes some very nice one's that are for outdoor and marine applications but they only come in white; I believe they are also 6in. It all depends on how much you want to spend
Pioneer's = $115
Bose = $200

I appreciate everyone's input! I've been looking at Niles speakers as some friends of mine have them on their boats and they love them. Anyone know or have them? Waterproof I know, but sound wise? Are they good? I just want to invest wisely. Don't want to have to replace a sysetem every year. Ya know?

Re: Need speakers and audio system

Kristen,

I've been pondering a new cd player and speakers for some time now.

Here's some of my thoughts...

Manufacturers say there is a difference between Marine and Car stereos. Some Marine stereos have coated circuit boards inside and sealed face panels, even with the security face removed. But, I've heard they don't last much longer than Auto stereos and don't have a longer warranty either.

After viewing reviews at Circuit City and other sites, I've decided to go with a Alpine receiver. They have a great warranty, top-notched service, and have fantastic reviews. Their lower end units,(under $200) are still cheaper than a "Marinized" unit. The reviews say they don't skip even when bounced around, they have great FM Sensitivity (around 9) which is by far the best reception you'll find in those remote reception areas. And, they have the highest CD Player signal-to-noise ratios (over 105)out there, so you can enjoy crystal clear tunes. I will however mount mine with a retractable cover over the face.

As to speaker selection... I couldn't locate the Niles you mentioned but that doesn't mean they aren't out there. Check "http://www.partsexpress.com". They don't carry Niles but go to there Ask the Tech section and inquire what would hold up best. I believe, as mentioned already, something with a polypropylene cone and rubber surround should hold up well. But, also take into consideration the basket frame material. I've seen plastic, steel, aluminum, etc., used for them. My personnal opinion would be plastic first and aluminum second, but I'm sure there's something else out there. MOst "marinized" speakers have plastic baskets.

Hope this helps,
DB

Re: Need speakers and audio system

I highly support your inclination to go with Niles speakers. I have them on my boat and in my house. The quality and sound are both fantastic. I was turned on to them from friends of mine who also put the OS20s on their boat. True, then can be expensive, BUT we found a company that moves them for half price. The woman who runs the company is named Cynthia. Her phone is (909) 897-5633. The company email is sapasales@aol.com. I plan to go back to them once I free up some more cash. They totally back their products and prices are very cool. Check them out, see if you feel the same.

Good luck with whatever you do. And, enjoy your tunes on the water!

Jedi
