Johnson wants $16 per condenser that works in Tn26 5hp outboard motor.

What substitute part will work? Still looking. Thanks.

Just about any that will fit mechanically. The value is not critical.

I tried two new and different condensors and neither worked. It could be the coils but I doubt if both would be bad although possible. They look like new.

I have gotten some more of the yellow ones that I showed you the last time you asked this question. Send me a PM if you want a couple of them. Unless you don't believe they will work....then pay the $16.

How did you sub them for a condenser? One end to the ground and the other to the points where the wire would have gone?

Yes. Or if I want to get real creative, cut the end out of the old condenser, solder the new one inside, and fill it with epoxy. Good as new.

The 300153 has a capacity of .2 mfd.

0.2 milli-farads or micro-farads? Does it say what voltage they're rated for?

FR,

Our local TV repair man didn't have any so if Radio Shack doesn't either I might take you up on the offer. Thanks. Bob

FR,
I put in two Radio shack 0.22 capacitors with longer wires soldered on and still didn't have any spark. I cleaned the points and will check the gap. Maybe it's the coils.

How did you clean the points? There is only one way to do a good job on those things. Take them apart and polish each contact individually with a strip of 400 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper backed up with something stiff like a hacksaw blade. There are a bazillion little insulators and spacers in those things, so pay attention. Best to do them one set at a time so you have a sample of how they go back together. Make very sure you get all the grit and fingerprint oil off the contacts.

Coils can go bad, but the ones in that motor are some of the most bullet-proof ones that OMC ever made. Hardly ever see a bad one.

EDIT: That may be some bum advice on the coils. I have to ask, does that model have magnets in the flywheel or is the magnet a round unit between the coils? The round one has the bullet-proof coils. The one with the magnets in the flywheel had crap for coils. They were long ago obsoleted.

Capacitors have a voltage as well as a capacitance rating. If the voltage applied is too much higher than the rating, then they won't be capacitors for very long....

I usually put some sandpaper in between them and move it back and forth. The guy at RS told me it as like 50 volts and would be ok.

It's too late tonight to take the flywheel off to check for magnets. I'll do it tomorrow.

The flywheel doesn't have the magnets so that's good. After cleaning one set of points I got a spark.

The capacitors are good to know about. Will the .22 capacitor work on any HP?

Since I don't have an extra flywheel nut to open the points,I had to get an emery board for the other side. Will check for a spark on this side later.

I put some carb cleaner in the plug holes and it didn't fire. The carb leaks like a sieve so that comes next.

Some other OMC condensers:
171448-0.1mfd
171449-0.1mfd
171470-0.3mfd
171471-0.2mfd
201484-0.2mfd
201753-0.2mfd
300153-0.2mfd
510173-0.2mfd
580256-0.4mfd
580321-0.3mfd

+/- 10% is ok.
50 volts is ok, more is better. Many magneto neon bulb type testers subject the condenser to 100 volts during the condenser test....be aware.

Re: Need substitute condenser for OMC 300153 TN 26

Personally, I wouldn't recommend replacing the OMC caps with radio shack ones. The OMC caps are designed for the high temps and, more importantly, high vibration environment of a marine engine. If the replacement cap was epoxied down so it wouldn't vibrate and break the solid wire coming out of it, then it may work for awhile. Sounds like one of the "false economy" items to me. But, if I was forced into retrofitting one with regular caps, I would: 1.) Source a cap from a known manufacturer (preferably Japanese) that has the highest temperature and voltage rating that will physically fit in the area. Try DigiKey or Mouser electronics. 2.) Cut off the long, solid wire leads as short a possible, and solder on insulated stranded wire. 3.) heat shrink and seal everything.

The thing is, for anything but "rare" condensers, the above steps may cost more than just buying the the OMC part....

We checked for spark this morning and lost it somehow. I re-gapped the plugs to .30" and took the carb off for new gaskets.

FR, how long do the capacitors last?
