Need tach to continue

Bought a used boat/motor and have been following along hitting high points on FAQs and postings relating to isssues I encountered. Tons of valuable info available on this site, very helpful! Went out to the lake yesterday. Starts and runs smooth and cool. Ran it out to 21.8 MPH on GPS, seems like it was planning out around 20. I understand with everything set up correctly I should expect around 28 MPH. Problem is somewhere along the way a previous owner removed the tach from the dash. I know I need a tach to continue but don't have a clue where to start to find one compatible with my engine and what to look for to hook one up.

Can anyone offer some insight on where/how I should proceed. Would rather not jump out and buy a new one if I could luck across a used one compatible with my needs once I'm clear on what those needs are.

Also are my expectations correct about the top speed?

I'm not the guy to answer your questions, but I have read some imformative stuff here on how tachs work, and what to look for to match what motor you have... doing a search should bring them up.

Bill.... On that engine, the tachometer operates off of the charging system.

You need a tachometer that operates off of six pulses (charging output) which has a dial on the back of it which can be set to number six (6). It would be available at any dealership or possibly on this site or eBay.

Full instructions would come with it, or if not, I'm sure you would obtain the information you would need here.

Teleflex and Faria are two of the more popular brands of marine instruments. The tach you need is generic and available here on iBoats and virtually any store that sells boating supplies (Cabela's, BoatUS, BassPro, etc).

Excellent! I've been pouring over searches on tach info till my eyes are crossed. The more I read the less I understood. I'm comfortable with how they work and how to hook one up I just couldn't nail down which one. I was hoping someone could simplify the info and you have. Thanks for tossing the lifeline once again!
