Hey everyone,

I need two teak boards - 8' long by 5" wide by 1/2 - 3/4" thick.

I've just finished putting a new floor in my boat, and adding new gunwales / storage to the sides, and I need the teak for the final detail in the project.

I looked around the mall here at iboats but couldn't find any?

Any suggestions on where to look (and hopefully where NOT to pay $100++ per board) would be appreciated.

You can see the project and the location for the teak application here:

http://www.shareaproject.com/imageDetail.php?p=1&i=125

If anyone has any good suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

Call around to some of the local lumber yards.
There may be some who specialize in marine lumber.

If you are not in a big hurry, teak pops up on Ebay all the time.

I have bought teak on eBay at attractive prices compared to exotic wood dealers.

You have to take a chance on the quality, though.

There are cheaper alternatives to teak. Eucalptus is a straight grain honey colored hardwood ideal for outdoor use and its about a third of the price of teak (the U.S. has commercial plantations). Western red cedar has a similar grain to teak but you would need to stain to get the color right. Artifical teaks are about half the cost of real teak.

Merry Christmas

Aldo

Try Lumber Liquidators, the folks who sell the hard wood flooring. They sometimes have teak at a good price.

Buttanic

Re: Need teak!

Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely check into ebay.

As for teak substitutes...I seriously considered using some alternative material similar in appearance and endurance, but I already have teak doors leading to the cuddy cabin, and I really want to match it with the new details.

I saw those listed at west marine, but the dimensions aren't quite right (no 8' lenghts) and they were a little pricier than I was looking for.

I realize I may not have much choice as far as the price is concerned, but I was hoping to find a "deal".

Aldo – California is full of eucalyptus! Some brain-iac brought it over from your backyard over a hundred years ago. Thought he would start a timber industry here. Problem was he brought the wrong species of eucalyptus … the kind that splinters and cracks, no good for building. It grows fast, people spread it around. There’s so much of it some folks think it’s indigenous here. The trees are empty. Please send koalas.

I didn't know that. Do you know what species it is? If it splinters easy I would suspect its yellow box or grey box - excellent firewood.

Trust me - you don't want koalas, they are the nastiest tempered creatures on the planet - and they bite!

Aldo

Re: Need teak!

I don’t know, suspect several different species. A small amount of it is used for timber. A lot of unwanted eucalyptus ends up as firewood. A parasitic critter is hitting the red gum eucalyptus hard; the red gum bore thingy, also from Australia. California is now importing Austrian wasps in an attempt to battle the parasite. Don’t know what we’ll import to get ret rid of the wasps, but if we keep following the food chain we’ll eventually get your marsupials. :)

Edit: I live in the Oakland hills … there used to be oak trees here. Take a look at this:
http://wwwlibrary.csustan.edu/bsantos/section3.htm

Re: Need teak!

Jeez rabbit, after reading that link the first thing that comes to mind is..............sorry. Maybe we should plant the damn things in iraq ;) .

We don't get any of them problems with the gums. I suppose that evolution (in Aus) has taken care of most of the bug issues. Its scary to think that wasps from Austria are being used to battle bugs from Australia in trees planted in the U.S.

We currently have toads (now in plaque proportions) from spain battling sugarcane beatles from asia in plantations in northern Australia - got anything over there that eat toads

Aldo

Mikey. He’ll eat anything. You can have him but your marsupials won’t be safe. :D

I saw your toad problem on the tube. Arizona, a couple states over, has the same problem with the same make/model of toad. They were imported for breeding to be used by biology classes. They have huge mouths and will eat anything that will fit. There was video of one of those things eating a gold ball that was rolled in front of it.

Also saw the problem you have (had?) with rabbits. Just so you know, they are no relation. :)

Dang it find that Video! So we got the wrong type of tree Eh? Well why can't we get the right kind? Seems we are all hung up on Teak and Mohgany and we can just stain some other wood to look like it for a lot cheaper price who is going to know? I am not telling. :D
