Need term for part of old trihull

I have a 79 Crestliner trihull that has been modified so that it no longer has its original gas tank. Can someone tell me what the name of that space is on this boat? Also, is it safe to put one or two portable gas tanks in that space and put the battery there as well? There seem to be small openings to the outside on both sides. I assume those are vents. Do I need to put a blower in?

Thanks for the help and advice.

The fuel tanks will need their vents vented outside of the bildge. If you are running an outboard, with tanks vented properly I don't think a blower is necessary, but someone else may chime in on this one.

Sorry the area you are describing is either the bilge area, OR a Doghouse.

Assuming you have an I/O the opening in the hull sides are for air intake louvers to feed the engine. You should have a blower on any enclosed engine bay. No do not put a battery in with fuel canisters, one spark and those fumes will blow you sky high.

Thanks, Splat & KW. I was trying not to be too wordy so left out some info. I am running an outboard and the area must be a doghouse. It's definitely not the bilge. The openings for air ventilation make sense. The battery is outside of the doghouse, and I'll keep it there.

A doghouse is found on boats with an I/O set up. Its a removeable wood box that covers the engine. Situated against the transom or dead center on inboards. Generally 3ft tall and 3-4ft wide, usually covered in vinyl matching the inteiror. Pictures might help if you can post any.

Okay. It's not a doghouse then. I'll get a few pics up soon. Thanks.

Was the old tank under the floor or under the rear splashwell?

It was under what I think must be the splash well. Too busy (and inexperienced) to post pics right now. It's end of the academic term . . . and I smell rhubarb pie baking downstairs.

Thanks for your help~

Re: Need term for part of old trihull

I am back with a photo or two showing the space I was wondering about. I am sure the original fuel tank was in this space because there is a gas filler cap above it. I'd like to put my portable fuel tank in that space to make more room in the boat. TIA~

Leave face open, remove old fuel cap for top venting. Mount battery elsewhere.
Looks like 2 tanks would fit nicely.

Thanks, I think two tanks is about right as well. Is there a specific name for that space? Is the term different from the one used when the boat had permanent tank?

Thanks to everyone who helped~
