Need To Be Walked Through A Re-seal Job

Hi guys, my reseal kit has just gotten here. It is for my 1965 Evinrude 9.5 hp Sportwin. I need to basically be walked through doing this aside from the drain/fill washers, so expect a lot of questions. This is my first re-seal, so how hard is it really? Pictures would be nice. Thanks in advance for any help.

Alright, i got the lower water pump housing removed to reveal the plate with a hole in the middle for the drive shaft with seals around it. I got that plate off, and there is a ring in the middle of it. Is this a seal that I need to remove? I found a way that will work for removing it, but I was just verifying that it was ok to remove it. I will post pics if I can find the cord.

You will need a few items before starting. These include a seal puller, a tool for removing the shift rod bushing/seal, and some 3M 847

For the drive shaft seal, a common seal puller works fine. Usually just pops out. When reinstalling, I like to put a little 3M 847 around the circumference of the seal.

The prop shaft seal can be a little harder, but if the housing has holes in the rear, use them to punch out the seal. THe housings can be fragile, dont break them. Take your time.

For the shift rod seal, contact F_R, he makes a tool to drive out the bushing. I can post some pics of this if you like.

Use the 3M 847 on the skeg screws, spaghetti seal and under the impeller housing plate as well. Cut the spaghetti seal ends square, and about 1/16" longer than the housing to get a good seal against the prop shaft seal housing. Not too long though, or they will buckle, causing a breach.

Pictures would be great. Would this work for pulling some seals? http://www.harborfreight.com/seal-puller-91352.html I almost feel like I am getting in over my head on this lower unit re-seal job with all these little o-rings. Most of which I have no clue where they go and what they are for.

The service manual has dozens, if not hundreds, of pics. As a bonus, it even tells you how to do the job properly.

I totally agree with yorab. If you don't buy a service manual or know how to do a re-seal job, it's not a good idea to be messin' around with it. You could very easily do a job and secrew something up. The "Top Secret File" may even have some step by step instructions on a re-seal job. However, since you own the motor, it would be a good investment to purchase a service manual, because you never know when you will need to rebuild the entire ignition system.

Here's a great link that can walk you through the whole job. It's for a slightly diefferent model, but the basic steps are the same. All you really need to do the job is a seal puller, gasket sealant (3M 847 is what the factory suggests) and the seals themselves, which you can get here at iboats for about $30. Good luck.

A shift rod seal remover is also another good thing to have. If you don't have one, you can probably just take your gear case down to the local friendlly Evinrude dealor and have one of their mechanics pop it out for you. Otherwise, there is a member here that's screen name is F_R, who makes them and sells them for a reasonable price.

That 3M 847 can be ordered online or purchased from Grainger, Fastenal, etc. I bought mine from a Fastenal store in PA. Some people have mentioned that they use other types of sealers for various years/models of motors as well as for various parts. I always try to go with the manufacturer's recommendation if it doesn't completely break the bank.
