I am going to be pulling my engine out this weekend, I was wondering if there is any way to check for cracks in the head and block with out completely dismantling it! This engine is seized and wont turn over but before i go any further with it (tear down and rebuild), I would like to know if the block or head is cracked due to improper winterization.

If its not turning, then a full rebuild is in order.
The best way to check for cracks is Magnaflux and the block nust be clean for that. So it needs complete disassemble and washed.

You can use acetone and fill the water passages with it to see if it leaks out, that takes some work also. This will only find a crack it can get to. Not ones between the valves and such.

Is there any visible cracks?

is a complete engine rebuild doable for a newbee? I am somewhat machanically inclinde. Can you point me into a direction where i might find good info for a rebuilld guideline. I have a Volvo AQ151C.

did it hydro lock . may-bee cylinder #4 is full of water or was . it would have broke a rod or something . you would need to do a complete dis assembly at that point . once you pull the exhaust look at the exhaust port on the back cylinder i guarantee its toast and you will need to weld in a ring or press in a ring to fix the eroded head there . check it out i have a 151c i complete rebuilt that's how i know

Nope. These aren't the easiest engines to rebuild. I have the AQ131 and while I have rebuilt engines before, I would not touch these Volvos. Take it to a machine shop, let them do the work, then you at least know it is done right. No second guessing yourself.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I agree with Robj, Have the block and head work done and assembled by a shop. You can bolt all the rest on yourself and do the install etc.

JP I was just wondering how you made out on your 151. if you rebuilt it or got another motor. I am in limbo right now.My 171 has bent valves and I am thinking on going with a different motor if it is worth the effort.
