need to clean carb

i have a 7.5hp merc 1980-81. it runs pretty good and has good compression but takes about 10 tries to get it started and to stay running. never have cleaned carb. is there an easy way to clean carb. i have never done it?<br /><br />thanks

if you can find some OMC engine tuner(spray can)-get the motor going and spray some into the throat of the carb-she's going to want to die but goose it a little to keep her going and do this a few times,then spray enough in that she does die-then let her sit overnite and soak.that works well for us

Hi there I have the same year motor with a serial # of 5616819 and I hade the same problems you did. I corrected mine with a complete carb rebiuld,fuel pump rebuild, check all fuel connections for air leaks mine had two leaks replace o-rings inside fuel connections, check filter in fuel tank, mine had wrong type sparkplugs should be using B9HS-10 at .040 gap. Those carbs are very easy to clean, I think that might have the integrated fuel pump, if so you might want to disassemble it before you go and start spraying carb cleaner in it. Carb cleaner will kill any rubber diaphrams it touches. Since you have it apart you should go ahead and rebuild the fuel pump too. Every merc integrated cab/fuel pump that I rebuild I do both, it only costs a little more, but if one needs it chances are they both need it. A good manual will have step by step procedures for both.
