I have a boat that I bought to part out and it has an antenna with about a 4 ft fiberglass base with about a 4 ft stainless steel whip that screws on and off the top. I would like to put this on my other boat because the vhf antenna on it is broken. Does this sound like it's a vhf antenna or might it be a cb antenna. I don't know how to tell the difference.

If there is a number on it, you could try to google it and see what turns up.

The only way to know for sure is to either get a number off it and google or to hook up a VSWR meter on it and find out the hard way. Yes it sounds like a VHF antenna but thats a guess at best, Marine VHF frequencies are in the 150 MHz band while CB is in the 29 Mhz band area much lower then the Marine Freqs Ultimately the best way is to put a meter on it since you need to test your system with a meter anyway. My bet is yes it is a VHF antenna for Marine freqs.
