I just bought a older Johnson outboard and was told that it is a 19 horsepower by the owner. But I am not so sure that is right. Can anyone tell me for sure by the numbers on the motor? Model# FD11- and the serial# 1514786. I have it on a little two man boat about six feet long and it is all it can do to just plane my boat with just me in it. With two people, forget it:'( I think a 19 horse power would plane a little boat like mine no problem. But I don't' really know. So what do you think?

1957 18Hp. Very popular basic design that was still made into the 80s in 18, 20, 25, and 28Hp models. Planing surface to weight ratio is what determines the ability of a motor to be capable of planing a boat. One place I worked had a 20' jon boat with a wide beam that could be planed with a 5Hp Scott. The same motor wouldn't have planed a 14 footer. There was a Lot of planing surface and not much weight. Still, I'd check for even compression and good spark.

it is a great motor. very dependable and hard to kill. it weighs around 100 lbs which is a lot of weight on a 6' boat stearn, you are lucky if it planes at all. there is not enough hull surface and weight distribution. i have a 1955 15hp on a 14' aluminum that will not plane, all it would do is stand almost straight up, i put remote controlls and ezy guide stick steering, located at the middle seat, now planes immediately and runs out at about 25mph.

Thanks alot I have been trying to find the year on that Johnson for a while. But now I just bought four more 10 horsepower seahorse motors and one scott atwater 10 horse. And I do not know the year on any of these either. Is there a way I could find out myself by the numbers myself? I mean how do you guys do it? Oh and he he, water and boat safety course huh? I have been hearing that one alot here lately. 18 horsepower I live for danger8) lol.
