Hey guys just wondering about replacing my transom and what Iwill need for glassing supplies.Heres what I'm thinking I will need.

2 sheets of 3\4 plywood
3 Gallons of resin (I'm thinking)

Things I don't know how much

? yards of some kind of cloth
? yards of mat
What should I use for thickening(to make like a peanut butter)?

How do you guys suggest I cover the wood for the transome?

Should I just use cloth or should I put a layer of strand mat between the layers of cloth?

If I should layer should I start with mat or cloth on the new plywood?

What weight cloth is good?

Any input would help.
Thanks
Bryan

I would highly recommend reading some threads prior to asking such generic questions in the future. We are all glad to help out but you need to make the effort to do some research. :) Everything you asked can be found in my thread and dozens of others.

Methods vary if using epoxy or poly resin. I used epoxy and did the following:

glued 2 - 3/4" ply together with PL Premo

traced pattern, cut out and sanded transom

coat wood two times with resin and on third add glass - front and back with 10 cloth (I also glassed the bottom edge as well)

mixed up epoxy pb and glued transom in (used Thixotrophic Powder from Mertons for additive to thicken resin - known by other names by other companies)

tabbed with 10oz cloth tape

added two layers of 1708 biax (extending the overlap on each layer)

added cross support (my boat had it to begin with - not sure if your boat would require it)

I tried to search this kind of stuff but keep finding myself reading through posts that have no real good info.

Is the 1708 cloth with a mat backer already on it?

Depending on the size of your boat you might be able to squeeze a transom out of 1 sheet of 3/4" ply, that is what we did. Make sure to cut one transom half slightly larger that the other so you can make your bottom edge angled to the bottom of the boat.

We put a layer of 1.5oz csm between the two pieces and screwed them together. Then shaped it and then encased it FULLY, front, back, sides, top and bottom with fiberglass. Then we PL premiumed it in and clamped it down and let it cure for 3-4 days. Then tabbed it in with CSM and then laid 2 layers of fiberglass over the final lay up.

PL is Is underlayment, subfloor adhesive CSM is chopped strand mat thats fiberglass matting.

I STRONGLY suggest you take the advise of bigredinohio and look at the threads where people have done or is doing this. Ooops is a real good one, indexed and all.

Good luck with your project and be sure to post plenty of pics.

Azlo,
You can pick up PL at HD, and or Lowe's, it's brand name is PL or PL premium. The rest of the information is contained in the threads listed above. We do like Pic's.:)
Have a good day.

Another noob question. 1708 has a layer of CSM right? I know you are not supposed to be able to wet out CSM with epoxy. Can you use epoxy with 1708 or 1208 or does it present the same problem? Is there any special trick to working with it?

You can use 1708 with epoxy. The trick to using it is to be more then liberal with the application of resin to the surface prior to and after laying the glass down and keeping a close watch for air pockets and/or delamination while it sets up.
