I just acquired a Evinrude Fast Twin 18 and wanted to find out the year model it is. Serial number 15032-03937

Also, the fuel/oil mix ratio that should be run in this motor. It looks and runs super, and the owner has been using 50:1, but I saw on a couple of other posts some early 60's model Evinrude 18's run on 24:1. The prior owner guesses this motor is a 1965.

Also, any advice on taking care of this motor would be appreciated. I think I have a real gem here. She won't get used much, probably twice per month, except during duck season when she'll get used 20-25 times during Dec and Jan.

The foot oil looks great, inside cowling is super clean and wires and tubes etc all look in good to very good shape with almost no cracking or dry rot. It has an electric starter that appears to have never been used, the bolts for the battery cables don't have a scratch on them. It does need a new pull handle. Haven't checked compression, don't really have the means, but it starts easily and runs great.

Re: Need to know yr and mix, other questions

My book shows this as a 1960. There should be a decal maybe on the underside of the hood stating fuel mix. My guess is that it is 24 to 1. There has been a lot of discussion on this topic everywhere and many think any engine calling for 24 to 1 should stay that way because of bearing composition. I don't think there's any way this particular should be run at 50 to 1. Others will chime in. Water pump impeller should be replaced and lower unit changed out of course. Good luck!

Thanks, guys, I appreciate it!

Is there anything I should look for or do?, since I know it has been run on 50:1. I don't think it was run terribly much, but I'll call the prior owner and ask. I'll immediately switch to 24:1, in fact I haven't even put this motor on my boat yet.

Get it home. Clean and set the points, check the condition of the coils. Those old OMC's are notorious for bad coils. If they are cracked, sweaty or discoloured they need to be replaced. Changed the impeller and fire it up.

Using synthetic oil greatly decrease the amount of smoke and oily sheen left by unspent gas and 2 stroke oil. I no longer run conventional oil in any of my motors.
