I have a section of a standard Galv chain link fence that is starting to show rust.I have seen people paint chain link fences with a roller and was wondering what the best paint to use would be.anyone have any experience with this .????? I was thinking rustoleum but maybe there is a more commercial type like what I painted my cement floor in my garage with.Charlie

I am sorry, that is not an easy task to do, they used to make use do that in the Military when we got in trouble.

I remember painting cables used for fencing

Use the rustoleum aluminum paint and a fuzzy roller

Hah, have fun! I have fond memories of doing that when I was about 12 years old with my brother. We did about 200 feet of 6 foot tall chain link. We used some oil based paint and were covered in it. Those were the days! Afterwards we walked to the gas station next door, pumped some leaded gas into a paint tray and washed ourselves up. Thank god we weren't in California where that stuff causes cancer.

I was thinking nearly the same exact things ... except we didn't have the gas station so close by.

We painted by brush once ... yes, it did take forever. That's why Dad had us do it.

We painted by spray gun one time ... yes, it did go all over the place. That's why Dad had us do it.

:D

Use a rust inhibitor first , then coat with galvanized paint. Keep in mind that chain link fencing is reasonably cheap so figure how much your time and paint will be before deciding wether to replace or paint. Most chain link is gauranteed for ten years, beyond that your on your own.

You nailed it there. We had a blast doing it and we were free labor.

On a serious note, The stuff we did was at a business. It had tons of plants and trees growing through it from neighboring property so replacing it would have been a bear. We used brushes because some of them were upset we were cutting down the brush and any overspray would have likely ended in police involvement. I know for fact that it still looked good 3-4 years later, and that was in Wisconsin. I would guess if you used a roller you'd still have to overbrush to get into the nooks and crannys.

I quit fighting rust years ago Rust Converter Gallon
You can paint over the converter but it isn't necessary except for aesthetics.

My experience, if you use a roller OR spray you need to brush it in if you want it to come out right. Figure the roller or spray is a good way to get the paint there fast, brush makes it stick.

You mean roll and tip !! Heh Heh! How about one guy on each side of the fence with a spray gun . But maybe you could hang a tarp or drop cloth on one side of fence and spray.

IMO painting over rust is like peeing into the wind. The electric utility here used to spend millions on maintaining their galvanized towers sandblasting and painting. Now they spray a rust converter on them and the rust turns into a hard black protective coating. No need to sandblast because the rust is needed to form the chemical reaction.
