My son and I have started to redo my old 1985 Bass tracker 17 tx, which I have had since it was new. It hasn't ran for several years now and has sat behind a building in the weather and all the decks and carpet and seats need replacing, but we are working on that. I intend to replace the water pump impeller and I think I can put kits in the carbs, but I wonder weather to get the OMC parts kits or to get some of the after market kits like the Sierra kits. I have read that some people thing the after market stuff is junk and some like some of them. I have been on the Ishopmarine site and they seem to list both but the aftermarket stuff is much cheaper. I just want to ask the experts here what I should buy to get this thing running again. I am looking for a manual for it and have picked up a spark tester and a compression gauge but I haven't even thought about trying to start this motor or even just crank it over yet. The VRO seemed to be working the last time I ran it but after some reading I believe that I may disable it and just mix gas for this old of a motor. I am all yours so fill me in, please.

I have used both OEM and sierra parts as well as other after market parts. I have never had any problems with the aftermarket parts. The OEM carb kits have floats and I don't think the Sierra ones do.
You are on the correct path, get the factory manual and it will have all the repair procedures and specs for your engine.
As far as the VRO goes, it's a toss up. Some people love the fact that they don't have to mix gas and oil. Personally, I don't like them, I prefer to mix the oil and gas, one less thing to go wrong.
