I need to remove the pin pictured below. Any suggestions? I've soaked with WD-40, heated with propane torch, and tapped with a block of wood/hand sledge. It budges maybe 1/16". Is there a better way? Should I pull the entire mount off the motor and pull the steering tube out so I can spin it to loosen the axle up? Cut it and buy a new one (can you even buy them for a reasonable price???). I'm installing an OMC power trim system and need to replace one of the current cylinders.

1976 85hp, 85EL76G

May want to make a clarification. It isn't a trim system, just one of the old dealer installed power tilt systems. Need to pull the axle out enough to replace the Stbd. assist cylinder with the hydraulic one. Can you still get new bushings for these things as well?

Jas...parts breakdown says there is a "spring clip/pin?" on either end of the rod. Did ya' remove these?

If so, the rod should slip right out....sure right. Lube the heck out of it and soak it good. Corrosion is a nasty thing.

Yup, pulled the pins, unless there are more on the inside between the bracket and the cylinder. The donor motor that had the tilt was so corroded I gave up and cut the axle. I had hoped mine would be easier since it shows no corrosion. Guess I just need to keep up with my powers of persuasion. Too bad the pin brads so easy (practiced on donor). Oh well, more heat/more lube/ more tapping.

Thanks for checking that out OBJim.

Shaker, hmm, never heard them referred to that way, but this reliable old horse would mix a mean drink....shaken, not stirred!

Trash the WD-40 and get some real penetrating oil like Kroil or PB Blaster.

c/6

Hooty

If you can get at it from both sides, and as it's moving a bit, just work it back and forth with hammer and lube (WD 40 or whatever). Tap it as far as you can in one direction, wipe out ends to stop gunge from going back in, then lube both ends, then back the other way and repeat. Tedious process but it should free up eventually and start to move more and more as you clear out gunge and more lube works in.

When it gets inside the hole and you can't hit it direct with a hammer, use a brass drift.

Don't try to force it through in one direction because it'll just bind.

Worked on my badly seized outboard pins, same as it works on my #%$&*** stupid Ford disk brake pistons every few years.

Make sure you support the housing around the axle, e.g. with wood blocks under it, to reduce chance of fracturing casting.
