Need to replace Alpha 1 Upper

I have a alpha 1 upper that needs to be replaced. It is a 1985 # A319493
from/ a 140 merc. The gears are 1.92 can I replace the upper with any alpha 1 as long as the gears are the same? Will a Gen 2 upper or pre alpha fit? Any thing else to look out for? I am looking for a used one

Why do you have to replace the upper????
If it's because the gears and bearing failed, you also will need a lower. The oil circulates from the upper to the lower and carries the metal particals to the lower also.

The bearing went on the upper
The lower still turns
I guess I may have to replace the drive
Would a pre alpha or Gen 2 bolt right up like a alpha 1

The Pre-Alpha will with the proper Input shaft on it,.....

An Alpha, Gen.II will Not........

I put one of these on my boat in July. So far so good & at less than half the cost of a Mercruiser drive & a 3year unlimited warranty, it's a no brainer.

I thought about going used, but you never know what you're getting.

Damn, those drives are CHEAP! Definately a no brainer for sure. Especially with a 3 year warrenty....
