Re: Need Volvo bell housing

the big and small block flywheels wil NOT interchange. the SBC 2 piece and one piece rear seal flywheels wil NOT interchange.
however if nessasry the 12 3/4 flywheel and 14" flywheel can be interchanged as long as both were desined for their respective crankshafts.
and as long as the block has both the straight and staggared bolt pattern in the block, most did not all.
but your pushing my fuzzy memory to my hotrod days.
the 400 small block flywheel cannot be used on a 350 even though it will bolt up.
I may know where some running take out SBC motors with volvo manifolds are that could be had cheap.
its a long story how they ended up in the warehouse a few years back but they can be had cheap.
they are based on the 87-95 style 5.7
and other than some small stuff thats been stripped here and there they were complete take outs that I replaced with 5.7 MPI's.

Oh and look what I just found.

Looks like a 454 and a 290 D/P. That bell housing would fit the 280 shield I have now.

OK I get it. Match the flywheel to the block. And there is only two sizes (12 1/2 and 14") flywheels and I can use either as long as it is for that block. Also Volvo small block Chevy bell housing only came in two sizes (for the 12 1/2 and 14 flywheels) and they will fit on a big block Chevy except for one bolt.

1991 & up flywheels on the 454 will not interchange with the pre 1990. Thats when (1991) the big block went to a one piece seal.

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

the 400 SBC flywheel will NOT work on the 454. it may bolt to it but wont work.
there are some early 70's versions of the 454 that wont interchange with the other 454 and same with a few years of the 396. the early 70's 402 was commonly called a 400 but shared nothing with the 400 sbc's rotating parts other than paint color.
the 402 was produced about 2 years and was an oddball big block but was quick.

best thing I can tell you is to procure your engine with a flywheel.
then we can procure the bell housing.
best I can tell you is make a trip here, if its volvo and here its free, the other stuff a friend loaded up can be had cheap as he is not going to use any of the volvo stuff.
he wanted the engines for parts.
all his stuff is inboard.

most of the SBC stuff used in the marine industry used the 14" manual shift flywheel.
not all but most.

Personally, I don't give a rats azz what engine or flywheel combination you use. You obviously seem to think every thing is interchangable, but it's not. But back to the flywheel.
ALL that I am trying to say is you can not put a 14" flywheel inside a bellhousing that was designed for a 12" flywheel. and Volvo didn't use that type bellhousing on a 6 cylinder inline engine.
It won't fit dude.
You can put that 12" FW inside a bellhousing designed for a 14" FW, but it won't work the other way around.

Now, if you want to play games with swapping flywheels from internally balanced and externally balanced crank and flywheel combinations, that's up to you. But don't try to put 5 gallons of sheet in a 3 gallon bucket. It ain't gonna fit.

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

I am with ya DonS
thats why I cant really answer all the questions.
I dont cobble, aint no money in it.
so I dont.
but it seems the guy has some ability and time. heck he built a chysler.
more than I would do.
dont take that to mean I aint never done one:)
but why bother?
I can make a 455 olds walk the 360 like a scorpion on a thread.
what I am trying to say is if you want to switch to a big or small block chevey get the motor first, then we can fit it to the drive.
Volvo used GM products a long long time.
most any V GM part you need is floating out there somewhere. but first you have to know the engine.
DonS
I have seen a 250 CID chevy six in front of a 280 shield/drive assy.
I did refuse to work on it :):).
my exact words were. awww ell no.

Sure, it's possible to do. I don't have questions with that. But it was a V chevy engine bellhousing stuck on an Inline 6 engine. Cause Volvo never used one.

But some guy sending an email saying he has a 6 Cyl Inline VOLVO bellhousing that will fit a 454 is bogus. There is NO SUCH THING.

awww ell no.

I can here it in my head as if they were standing in front of me, but what show and who said it............ Please!

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

I to will be thinking who said it for the rest of the night. Sounds like a Sam L Jackson line but from where?

I have to say thanks guys. Its like the olden days around here with R/B, Bond-o and Don. If Lube Dude or what ever calls himself these days would chime in it would be a party. d:)
I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers with all the stupid questions. This is all a big leap for me. Like I said before I screwed myself with this mopar I have now by not having a source for all the necessary parts before I was in way to deep to get out. I want to know all possibility's before I throw more money in that hole in the water. You all have answered all my questions and a new motor will be bought soon with confidence that it will work. Then we can move on to a bell housing from there.
Thanks

Will Smith. Men in Black II

I think.

Now I have to go watch it again and see if it's there.

The bellhousing was the easy part ;)

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Measure the flywheel.
One other thing, look just above the starter on the block and see if it has a tag with a Mercruiser serial number.
That may help with a lot of other parts later on.

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Should pick it up Saturday. Will have a lot more then. Just got off the phone with the guy. Its been paid for so I asked him straight up to tell me about it. Everything from the pulleys to motor mounts to the flywheel come with it. Needs a distributor cap and should be good to go. To me that means it will be a easy rebuild. Cant wait to get my hands on it and for $660.00 I feel like I stole it.o:)

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Somewhere in this LAS thread.... f_inscreen asked if a Chevy V6 bellhousing will fit the chevy V8
The answer is YES!

for example Volvo penta AQ175a used a Chevy 3.8 which has the exact same bellhousing as a sbc V8...

THEN, just to add to the meandering of this thread.... there is or was a couple of dressed 340 marine engines near me for sale on eyahbay.
Why the sudden mopar deletion?

EDIT - i see now...big block!!!... ok.... you wanna break the sound barrier or sumpthin... cool....! :)

No thanks. I am done with Mopar. It was a great engine but the world of Mopar performance is limited to say the least. Then if you can find it you pay through the nose for it.
Why did it go this time? I have no clue.Could have a number of things but the bottom line is its broke, bad. I had two options. Spend a ton of money just to get it back to where it was or go the route I am now. Got a little tired of the same road and thought it was time to take a turn and go in a different direction.
