Man the stories that picture tells me.
There is supposed to be a pad just under the Holman Moody tag in that triangular area.
Without that pad, the if the drive kicks up, it will go too high and the ujoints will hit the bellhousing. and from the looks of it, it already happened. The upper part of the bellhousing where the bellows attaches has been ground off. Bet the bellows gets water in there too. ( I noticed the light gray oil spots around the shaft) looks like milky oil to me.
Then you have flat washers under the 6 mounting bolts. That ss lock that goes between 2 bolts should be the only thing under the bolts. After they are torqued (35 ft lbs) they should be bent up on one flat of each bolt.
Also, if you have a 14" flywheel on the 454, you will have to replace the ujoint yoke with one with fine splines. Nothing with course splines on the bellhousing for the larger flywheel.

The picture was taken just after the transom shield was installed (maybe a hour). I didn’t get to it yet before the picture was taken but it was the only picture I had showing the splines. It was installed before the first ride trust me. As for the U joints hitting the bell, it may have happened before I bought it. It was used and abused before I got it. All new guts inside and a paint job and it was ready to go. I have never noticed any new digs (the paint would have been missing) and I would have. I always look for stuff like that and I have had the drive off 3 times this year. Especially since I install the 280 T shield.

Not a drop but I see why you would think so. The gray you see is JB Weld. The damn seal kept popping out for some reason. Did that about a year ago and it has never moved since.

I use the washers because the bolts that came with the original motor were rotted. They were the closest I could find (in length and size) local. As for the tabs being bent. They never were before but I trust you when you say they are supposed to be. Nothing was right when I bought the boat why should they have been.

That’s why I am here. You guys know your stuff. I would rather be shown how to do it then spend a ton of money learning myself.

I pick up the motor tomorrow (at 7AM and its 2 and ½ hours from here). Oh well I don’t think I will sleep much tonight anyway. Christmas is early for me. Man I love this stuff!!! We will know a lot more then. Cleaned up the basement shop, under the deck (my outside work area) and put my new motor hoist together tonight. I am pumped. I have wanted to do this since my first ride, well maybe the second. But anyway I know good things are going to happen.
Thanks guys again for your help.

It is a 1987 Mercruiser 340 MIE and originally had a Borg Warner tranny on it.(No outdrive)
Look at the flywheel, it should have a flex plate already attached to it. If so, check the splines from your old bellhousing, they should be the same splines.
You need Merc service manual #9 for the engine specs.

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Ya he sold the tranny separate from the motor. I didn't need it anyway. There is a flywheel but no flex plate. I can get one of those, I think. Are they the same as a Volvo vibration damper?
I will have some pictures and stuff up later. Got home from the pick up about a hour ago and have been taking a break but its time to get it out of the truck.
Thanks for the manual number. That makes it easy.

We get the flex plates from NAPA. Volvo costs too much.

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Ya I get mine at Cobe Marine. The last one I bought was about 65 bucks but as long as it is the same thing. Well I got it apart. Will need a little work inside. I think they let water get down the carb while it was out of the boat. Just one small spot in one cylinder. The heads will need a little more work. Will need a water pump. Looks like something feel on it and bent the shaft. A couple other things that will need attention also. Like the exhaust manifolds had something living in them so I am not sure about them yet. This is the whole reason I had to get started so soon. Now I have months to get it together.
Another question. What should I look for in case there is freeze damage? Not saying there is. Starting to get dark but I did look it over the best i could and I saw nothing. What are the bad areas in the block and heads?

IT says.

BTW, I think it's time to start a new thread. This one is taking forever to load, then I have to go to page 2. What a PITA.

Also, I have no clue what an option code is. Must be something from the 80's

Re: Need Volvo bell housing

Ya I am not really liking the new format for iboats. bbBoard v2 is usually pretty easy to deal with:/
Even when I do a search here I get that stupid pop up window instead of a page when you click on a topic. It also lists different posts in the same topic. Oh well I am not paying for it. My hats off to these guys that keep the place running. Trust me I know how hard it is.
Tonight I will start a new 454 post.
