I just purchased the above mentioned boat. It has the Volvo Penta 260A V8. The drive I believe is an Aquamatic 280B. The drive must have lost a cog and destroyed the upper gears as well as the housing.

Anyone have any idea where a good place would be to get a used upper housing for this or what would match up. I see all kinds of 280D, 280T and so forth and I have no idea what would match up either with the whole unit or just the upper?

I have until spring ;) but would like to learn a bit more about the VP nomenclature ;)

Thanks for the help of a noob.

Slowly learning a bit more, but not much. I have the original manual and it shows that the drive should be a 280B. However, the top cover on this drive does not go over the back cover. The back cover goes all the way up. What does this tell me? That I need to learn alot more about VP drive ;)

Any Help anyone? I do have the part number off of the upper gear box and it is 854314. I have found a few new drives but WAY too much money. I need to either find a used one or a complete used drive.

However, I do not know what drives may just simply bolt up. I know this drive has the "trim/tilt" on it but after looking at the drives that VP made, I am again, completely lost.

Please help :D

Post some pictures. Are you sure about it being a 95 Bayliner? Because they only came with Mercruisers in 95.

1985 would be a 280 or 275. the B after the 280 is a ratio designation only. you will see 280B, 280C and 280D. 1.61:1, 1.89:1 and 2.15:1 respectively. any 280 upper will work when the shimming is done right and yoke spline matches the pds splines.

if the rear cover comes up to the top, someone has either changed the top cover and rear cover or its a later transmission.
200 250 are small bearing,,,, 270 280 275 285 and ealy 290 are mid size bearing, later uppers use the larger bearing retainer.
you want the mid size bearing upper unit if this is a 280.

The 280T was an early power trim drive. the T transmission should work but you may need to change the yoke on the universal shaft.

These guys, http://www.sterndrive.com/, are relatively close to me. Never done business with them or even visited their shop, but they do seem to have a fair amount of parts for older VP drives.
Might be worth a phone call.
