Re: need wiring harness

I don't think you will find a new harness for an engine that old, I couldn't when I was looking for one about that vintage.
I tried several salvage yards and the ones they had were not much better than the one I already had.
I finally gave up and made my own harness, a lot of work but when I was done I had a brand new harness that worked great.

Do you have a multi-meter? ohm it out. If your not to savvy with electrical, let me know, and I'll try to guide you through it.

Those motors are pretty simple, and the harness will be as well. You could bypass the motor plug. That is manual shift right? You need power, ground, starter solenoid, hot light, killer wire. If you have a generator you need a couple more wires. I would skip the original ammeter setup, in favor of a voltmeter. Sounds like a single DPDT switch and two pushbuttons, plus 5 wires. How about some trailer lighting wire (4 wires)and a seperate ground?

Re: need wiring harness

A terminal block makes it look neater. if you have a generator, you need the external mechanical (looks like a '62 Chevy or Ford auto) voltage regulator. if no generator, no regulator is necessary.

If you have a generator+regulator, you can monitor the charging with a dash-mounted voltmeter connected to the +12V and ground at the keyswitch.

Re: need wiring harness

few more questions and i might have this figured out. maybe i hope. al-53 thanks for the info on ebay but i already have that part that i am going to bypass. how do i know if i have a generator and if i have no generator do i need a ammeter? which in my service manual connects to a voltage regulator. also would it hurt to mount my battery in the front of my boat? i have a 14.5' open bow. what size wire and or cable would i need?

Re: need wiring harness

Generator will look kind of like a starter except there will be a belt running from the flywheel to the generator.
If no generator, you do not need a ammeter or voltage regulator. You might want to install a voltmeter to monitor your battery.
You can mount your battery in the front, but it might be easier to relocate your gas tank.

Re: need wiring harness

If you do not have a generator, you do not need a voltmeter or ammeter. A voltmeter is not very useful to tell you how much power remains in the battery. Just buy a marine starting/deep cycle battery and charge it every week or so. The pull start on that motor is a reliable backup if the battery is run down.

If you want to mount the battery in the bow, use 2AWG or fatter (0AWG) battery cables. However, you might want to remote the fuel instead.

There is a diagram in the back of my Clymer manual. you can probably make a copy from a library. If I go to my office tomorrow I could make a copy and fax it to you. I wont know until the AM if I am going in. Let me know.....David
