Need wiring help

I have a 93 Nitro with a (factory) 45lb thrust 12/24v trolling motor. I have had trouble getting it wired correctly so while having the boat serviced this week I asked the mechanic to take a look and wire it up correctly. Well I picked up the boat and brought it home and tried to get the trolling motor to work with no luck. I have 2-12 volt deep cycle batts with a pos. & neg. lead hooked separate to each battery and nothing works. I have inline fuses on each positive lead that are good as well. Here's the kicker...I can hook up both pairs to one battery and get it to work with the motor set on the 24v switch. I'm clueless on why this is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a few questions that might help somebody else answer your question.......I'm not an expert on trolling motors. Did the motor work with the factory wiring? The two negative wires are probably common.....have you tried attaching both of them to the battery negative post, but only one of the positive wires to the positive post at a time? Have you checked the motor switch out for continuity? It would seem, from what you wrote, that the 12 volt side circuit side of the motor, or switch, is faulty........so why not run it on 24 volts? It is factory wiring. I will try your idea tonight when I get home, worth a try. I don't care to run it like this but being hooked to one 12v bat. tells me the trolling motor is running on 12v even though the switch is set to 24v. Also since both pair of leads are hooked to one battery I will have to unhook the leads and re-attach them to the other battery when the juice runs out. I'm guessing the switch is out, but I'm no electrical guru.

You have left out some very important details about your connections. 1) what type of female connection do you have on the boat. (two, three, or four terminals). 2) How many terminals on the plug for the trolling motor. 3) How many wires in the cable running from the plug to the trolling motor and what color are they (answer will be two or three and red/black, or red/black/orange). 4) Does the boat have a panel with a CHARGE/RUN switch or a 12/24 switch. 5) Does the motor have a 12/24 switch? Post what you have. Without that info we can only guess. Pictures of the front and back of the receptacle, battery connections and the motor plug and cable help. Your boat is very typical of older styles that were set up for 12/24 operation. Those setups normally ran separate wire pairs from each battery to a four terminal receptacle. Some boats had the panel with a CHARGE/RUN switch which allowed charging the two batteries in parallel or switching to RUN placed them back in series for 24 volt operation. Remember, details, details, details.

no charge/run switch.

the trolling motor has a 12/24 switch
