I have a 1989 Mercury Mariner 75 SN: 0C105224, that I just bought, after sitting for years, and I want to start it on the stand. I believe the controls go through the big round plug that is disconnected, and I want to start this thing on the stand. I do have the boat it came off of, but no key for the boat. I had to pull if off the boat because I had to give the seller back his trailer and didn't want to damage the OB by dropping the boat on the ground with the motor attached.

I can operate the starter by the solenoid. Have turned it over already. Need the info on what wire(s) are necessary to power the coils and control module(s).

Thanks,
Chris

You should read this. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086 Other than the battery connected, nothing else is needed. The motor gets it's power to run from the stator. Be sure you have water going to it and you will have to disconnect the fuel line to shut it off. Disconnecting the battery will do nothing but damage your charging circuit.

To stop the motor, you can connect a jumper from the harness plug #1 black/yellow wire (NOT Yellow/black) to ground.

So you are saying that it should fire just by turning it over, with fuels attached, and no wire to anything else because the statos will provide all necessary power to run it? Shutting it down will require the black/yellow striped wire to be grounded to the battery or engine block, or let it run out of fuel?
Just trying to be sure here, because I don't know what, if anything is wrong with the engine, aqnd I don't want to make it any worse.
I will definitely have muffs on before trying to start it.
What about the oil injection? How can I make sure thta is wirking properly? Should I be concerned about it?
Also, I am looking for recommendations for a service manual. The manuals I see on iBoats for the Mariner only address 1990 and newer. Mine is an 89, and the manual for 89, in the Mariner section, states "Mercury ONLY", so I'm thinking that might not be the right one.

Thanks,
Chris

The black/yellow wire will show up at the switchbox. You can hang a jumper off that terminal and short it to ground to stop the engine.

If you are concerned about the oil system, put 50:1 fuel/oil mix in the test fuel tank. If it's oiling, it'll be a little smokey. If it isn't, the engine won't be hurt. Once you have verified the oil system, you can run straight gas in it.

If you wish, you can connect a test light, or even an alarm buzzer (sonalert) between the tan wire (negative) and battery positive. That is the signal wire for the oil alert if it exists, and the overtemp alarm.

hope it helps

Re: Need wiring info to start Mariner 75 on stand

Thanks a bunch guys. I fired it up this evening and it runs OK. Didn't run it much, and had a devil of a time getting fuel into it, but a little carb cleaner helped, since I don't know how to choke it (I squirted oil in the cylinders before anything else, and used as little carb cleaner as I could get away with, to keep from messing up the bearings). It finally started running on its own, smoking like crazy, but I was mixing 50-1 plus oil in the cylinders, plus if the oil injection is working....
I ran out of fuel, but it ran for about 5 minutes at idle. I revved it slightly, but don't want to be too aggressive until I get my manual and figure out how to verify the oil injection.

Thanks again.
