Howdy, GC.

If that model number is really V4S-11 your engine is a 1959. :)

Re: need year/and have questions

well to start off,the boat has been sitting for about four years.so i flushed the tank put new gas and oil in it.im sure rebuilding the carbs is in order, but havnt done that.i did however get it to start after putting a new battery in it.what i am concerned about tho is the amount of gas and oil that i see in the barrerl i have the motor in im not sure where its coming from.there seems to be two parts to the lower unit from what i can see.just above that i think is wheres its coming from.also i have a small amount of oil coming from a pin hole next to the fill plug is there a seal i should be concerned about.as you can see this is my first large boat.and im limited as to what i know so bare with me.thanks for your reply.

Crazy,I believe the fuel ratio for motor is 16:1
and your motor is a notorious gas hog.I think the
scum in your tank is from and older design motor
doing its best which is none to good. You may need to check the crankshaft seals and the lower unit gearcase seals. For manuals check the tab at top of this page or Amazon.com,EBAY or Ken Cook Marine Publications at:www.kencook.com
Good luck.

Re: need year/and have questions

Hey, GC.

Steelspike is correct that the original ratio for the V4S-11 was 16:1. Later, however, OMC changed that to 24:1, which is what I recommend you use.

Many folks are using 32:1 and even 50:1 in older OMCs believing that modern oils will make that much difference. I don't think so.

If your engine is running on all 4 cylinders I agree with Steelspike that the amount of unburned oil/fuel in the barrel is normal.

If you want to get a good picture of your engine's health, do a compression check and a plug inspection. Even compression, within 10-15%, and all plugs dry and tan are signs of a healthy engine.

Let us know what you find. :)

Carb cleaner should not be used on 2 strokes as a starting fluid. Fill a spray bottle with pre-mixed fuel and use that instead.
