I am trying to determine the year on a old Johnny that my nephew owns,,we need the teeth that mesh in the handle where it bends that accelerate the motor.. The model number is QD-16 and the serial is 1237008...It is a old 10 hp. motor. The gears seem to be slipping,,is this common. Is there any place that would still have parts for a motor this old.

The model number of QD-16 indicates that your engine is a 1955 10hp Johnson. Other members will hopefully jump in here with possibly places that might have the parts you need.

Nice engine. Last year for green.

Worn gears happen over time. When I need a specific part I keep an eye on eBay and the classifieds at the Antique Outboard Motor Club website http://www.aomci.org/. You can also get parts from Twin City Outboard http://tcoutboard.com/ and various others on the web.

Try to get the newer (cast) version of the gears. The old stamped ones gave a lot of trouble. You can not mix them though. You will need a gear/shaft for both the tiller and motor side.
