Hey guys i am in the process of buying my first boat but need some advise. I found the boat im looking for it is a 1991 starcraft 190SFM. The problem i am having is that the motor is a 115hp Tohatsu. I never really heard anything about this motor and don't see many around. I need some honest advise about this motor because im getting different responses from marinas. It seems if they sell that brand it is great, if they only deal with mercury and jihnson then they are junk. Thanks

Re: need your help

Is it a carbureted motor, or a TLDI? If the model is MD115, (the D is for direct injection) it is a TLDI, which is the most reliable direct-injection you can get. If it is an M115, it is still a solid motor, with 4 carburetors. Of course our dealership sells the Tohatsu brand, and I work on them. But we could sell just about any brand. We decided on Tohatsu because it is the lowest-cost, highest-reliability product on the market.

That would be an old carbed model, great engine and dealers always knock a brand they don't sell....At least most do:)

Hey guys, the model number is M115A2 he thinks it is a 1994. What does the A2 stand for and is this still a good motor. How does it compare to the MD115. Also is Tohatsu comparible to honda, from my research it seems they have actually been around longer and make all mercury motors 30hp and under. The guy gave me the serial number to the motor if i give it to a marina/dealer could they confirm the year??

Like Elvin said, a great motor. Regarding the model info... the suffix is the revision of that unit. "A" would be the first major release, the "2" is the second minor revision. Once a motor has been released, consumers may find things that could be improved, such as alternator output, carb mixture systems, etc., and the factory will respond with a revised model. In your case, that's the last of the revisions, so you have the most mature of the carbed 115 motors. Yes, Tohatsu has been making OB motors for over 50 years, and yes, they build the Nissan, and they make the Merc motors of 30 hp and under. For servicing a Tohatsu, year is not important -- model and serial is everything. If you call Tohatsu at 214-420-6400 with the serial number, they may be able to look up the year (if you are curious).

Re: need your help

o.k thanks alot. Im going to look at the boat on monday and feel much more confident/comfortable knowing that the motor will be just as reliable as most other common makes. Thanks again. I also found a dealer near my house so i dont have to worry about having a difficult time getting parts.
