The Cali thing is just the gas cap anyway. As far as portable Generac generators. Honda clone engines, fairly standard generator heads. If that's what you want, just get an HF.. I think the Inverters are clones of the Honda or Yamaha inverter generators also.. Not until you get up in their product lines that Generac's are above the quality of others..

I think Catalyzed exhaust has been a requirement for federal small engine emissions for a while. I could be wrong tho.. I know the Cali engines have the funky looking gas cap

I own a chonda and a honda. The honda is well worth the price difference. On paper the chonda was the better unit. In the real world I had to go get a honda because the chonda died all beit under warrenty and I had to mail it back to the distributor and wait 6 months for the replacement. My honda is quieter, runs longer and is lighter in weight. If you have to go chonda the champion models at least have a dealer network.
