All,
I have been working on my late fathers little 1959 Lonestar Monterey for the past 8 yrs or so as I have had the resources... (new marine plywood floor, fiberglass, my first arrempt at gelcoat, professional done two tone upholestry, loose laid carpet - cut and bound, all new electrical lines, steering, and finally the reason for this post a 1958 35Hp Johnson Outboard.

The outboard has been gone through by myself previously and was my first attempt at outboard repair. Since this outboard, I have gone through and successfully done 6 others that have been on the water with my other boat. The outboard in question has received new coils, points tune up set, carb kit including float, lower unit seal kit, and of course the impellor.

I finally decided today is the day to launch and at least get the boat on the water before doing the final items (simple fish finder, small radio, and the bottom end paint)

So I launch the boat and she floats fine since the last time, almost 15 yrs ago, being in the water. I turn the ignition key and the electrical motor starts the outboard and she runs fairly decent at idle. This I somewhat expected as I tested it previously in a large tank trash bin (~150 Gallons). I notice upon kicking the throttle up on the boat that the engine RPM increased but it was not the correct RPM for the boat's throttle position (low->medium low). After unhooking the cables to the oubtoard, from the boat, I reaize that the outboard throttle lever will not exceed the start position when I try manually to adjust the outboard.

Upon inspection of the linkage to the carburator it appears someone has played with the throttle linkage and it was bound up. The long shaft that has the "hasp" screw (part # 0304221) and collar pin (part # 0304222) had its screw pretty much sheared off (someones previous adjustment I am guessing) and was loose. I believe its moving around might have bound things up temporarily as the lever appears to move around correctly now and I can move from Low->Start->High even when attached to the boat cables.

I am figuring that I will be able to remove the screw and find a replacement...but I assume this has some sort of adjustment procedure does anyone know of this adjustment procedure.

I also realized, that I incorrectly did the packing around the carb needles and have orderd a set of the felt carb rings. I did this same thing previouisly to one other outboard and corrected...a beginners mistake.

If anyone has the adjustment procedure and knows the screw size off hand I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
Chris

All,
Found the adjustment procedures in my factory service manuals. The rod is referred as aa fuel saver rod/shaft linkage.

The bolt is 10-24 and is easily obtainable from a good hardware store.

Procedure for Adjustment is as follows (loosely);
1) Set speed control grip to Fast position (In Forward Gear)
2) Double Check the ignition plate is fully over to powerhead block stop
3) Move "hasp" or collar all the way over so it just touches the other item that is on/rides the fuel saver shaft/rod (aka pivot pin)
4) Tighten lock screw which is part of hasp\collar assembly
5) Move from low->start->high and back to make sure everything is correct.

I then connected to boat and tried everything and it worked as well.

Thanks,
Chris

Gotta love those Lone Star Boats. I have a '59 Lone Star Newport (aluminum) with a '59 Johnson RDSL-21B
