I have a 1987 Mercury 80hp outboard on my pontoon and i have recently noticed oil dripping from the water intake. I did some research and believe this would be the shift shaft seal. Does anyone know where I can find an impeller kit and a shift shaft seal for this model motor?

Also, changing the oil as I am typing this, Ive noticed water in the lower unit oil.

Re: needing some help...

I live in western ky. I dont know much about boat engines, but im pretty good with a wrench, so i figure i'll give it a shot, I took a previous boat to the local boat mechanic and they charged me $400 just to clean/rebuild the 3 carbs on my engine, so I'm planning to start doing some of my own work on my boat, lol

Do youself a favor and buy a factory service manual for your specific engine. It saves time, frustration and you won't have to do the job twice.

Here is the parts list for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/298.cfm

Service manual P/N: 90-13645--2

You did not provide your engine s/n, this full manual is for s/ns 0A996142 thru 0D283221

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/13645_2/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Re: needing some help...

Thanks alot, those links will help me a ton. I have not even found the s/n on this motor yet, my last motor had a tag on the side with s/n and model.

Also, To fix the oil coming from the raw water intake problem, I replace the shift shaft seal right? Is there another name for the shift shaft seal, because i cannot find one online.
