Well good news...I found my trim leak. Bad news, I'm not sure how to fix it. Its coming from one of the back bottom hoses of the motor that runs down to the bottom of the bilge and I can't even see where it goes.

I tried just tightening it up at the motor (where its leaking from) and it doesn't seem like its done much. It appears to be leaking from the fitting. What are my options?

Will teflon tape do anything?

those fittings are hydraulic fittings and teflon tape won't help. If it's tight then the fitting itself is probably gone bad. Time for a new hose.

I was just thinking. Isn't there an o-ring thats suppose to be in the fitting?

Those hoses should be flare fittings, no o-rings.

I took the line off. It looks perfect. How/Why is it leaking?!

who knows. if ya can't tighten it up and stop the leak. R&R the hose. if that don't stop it. R&R the female connection too.... if that don't work.... ?


it is a 35 year old connection yer dealing with...... corrision, burrs, etc...

I replaced both of my hoses from the trim pump to the lower unit last spring. It isn't easy but it can be done. My boat is only 27 years old though The worst part is where the hoses connect to the lines going to the trim rams in the lower unit. Full of gunk and corroded. Dive in!

The connection looks great, the threads and all are perfect. The flare is great. the hose looks fine. I added some dye to the system and thats how I found the leak. But thats why this whole leak is so perplexing. I don't see any reason why it is leaking. The hose itself isn't leaking, so I really don't want to buy a hose because it doesn't need one.

it must need one. because the one ya have leaks. it is a hydrolic hose. capable of much psi. 1000?. 3000? ya may not be able to see the imperfection...... there's certainly nothing serviceable about a hydrolic hose that i'm aware of..... short of being sure yer connections are real clean. any dirt and i'd think the high pressure might blow by the imperfection..... maybe... i aint the hydrolic guy...... another thought is. so if ya can't do anything like teflon tape, or orings or whatever to help it seal. what are yer choices as for rectifieing the leak? R&R the hoses?

Use a magnifying glass and see if the hose flare is split. Fairly common problem. The result of over tightening.

well, I was wrong. Its indeed not the line. I didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

The plate on the bottom of the motor/reservoir is leaking. I presume there's a gasket there thats bad. It took me forever to figure that out! I'm glad its not that hose though!
