I have 1972 Johnson 2 hp. I have been working on as it has begun to have troubles. How do I remove the packing of the high speed needle valve? It is some sort of fiber that seems to be impossible to remove. I was able to get it out of the slow speed valve by taking an hour to scrape out fibers, but the high speed isn't coming out. It is uneven or I wouldn't even mess with it because it looks like both pieces of packing are still there. My motor doesn't have the speed it once had and I believe this is the problem. I have completely rebuilt the carb and made sure there was no fibers from the slow speed gasket clogging it. I had to replace the low speed valve entirely as it dropped in the canal somewhere. My high speed needle is slightly worn. I am going to replace it just to make everything right. I love this motor and want it to perform properly again.
Does anyone know a way to remove that packing without damaging the threads. I have searched to no avail for this information. I have tried a crochet hook, razors, and several types of picks including dental picks. Is there a tool I can purchase for this?
