I have a 1968 Evinrude 85 HP and I just rebuilt the starter on it. I put it back together and tried to start it looked back and the starter was smoking at the post, so I stop and looked at the battery too and the neg cable was hot as hell. What went wrong here. At least I know were I can get my parts to rebuild starter again.

Yep...heat equals excessive current flow &/or resistance. Check the easiest, most obvious things first, like cable connections/proper polarity.

Keep a fire extinguisher handy!! Oh wait...by looking at your member name I suspect you already have that covered!

Good luck!

Walt

Roger that firemedic, pos. (+) goes to the post on the starter. Like previous responces, look for loose connection or direct short, maybe in armature or field windings.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

I replaced the brushes and the fields. Surely I did get bad fields.

If you replaced the field coils. Did you have good rotation before you buttoned it up?

Field coils can drag on the armeture.

I went to town with a hand impact. Seemed to have good rotation. Would that cause the neg cable to smoke like that?

Maybe one of your brushes got pushed out of place when you put it back together and now it hits the the outside cover of the starter. That would translate into a heat creating short. And there may be a weird reason like you tightend those long bolts that tie the starter into the housing to much and by doing so you warped the outside housing just a tat.Try to loosen them up quite a bit and see if the same thing happens when these bolts are loose. It is a long shot but it happened to me and it took me forever to figure that one out
Good luck,Rolmops

yep firemedic, like has been said already, a short circuit is your problem. if you're opening the starter back up, pull the armature out(the inner shaft part with drive teeth on it), and you can use jumper cables to test for a problem in the field coils. clamp black to case, red to post. should not get a spark (make sure the brushes are not touching anything). also look really closely at the 'cylinder' inside for a shiny/rubbed spot, which would mean your new fields are touching the armature and shorting out. good luck. and look for burnt spots(small 1/8 spotweld type) inside & on armature. i've seen old armatures short between the bars (if you know what i mean). when rebuilding a starter, these gaps are usually scraped free of debris, as it is metal dust.
best of luck. :)
