Sad to say that I let a 175hp merc sit for many years without proper preparation for the storage. I now find my self dealing with dry rot lines, rusted bolts and all the other things related to neglecting a motor. I have a manual and can do most repairs myself but know that I don't know everything I should. Any advice about things not to forget would be helpful.<br />thanks in advance

Re: neglected Mercury 1988 175hp

use the red search function and in the engine faq, search awakening a sleeping outboard. be sure to replace the impeller, and change the lower unit oil. remove the plugs, tilting the motor all the way up and put marvel mystery oil in each cylinder, soak over night. then lower engine, be ready to catch oil. put a towel over the plug holes and turn over, when you do oil is going to blow out the plug holes (don't have the wifes clean laundry hanging behind the motor) then check compression. do this before you spend any money. without compression all else will be wasted.
