Re: Neighbors and Favors

I spent 3 hours today milling and gluing up some huge pieces of oak which is going to be a bar top
.

That, my friend, is what I do for enjoyment and relaxation. Working on boats and boat motors is a job I have to do to be able to afford my hobby.

My immediate neighbors are great. No complaints, and all are self sufficient. I've helped them out from time to time, but won't do the half day or all day projects for them. We usually get together once or twice a year to catch up on neighborhood and town gossip. All in all, I can't complain.

I've been reflecting on your words of wisdom for the past couple/few hours. I didn't know you made sawdust too Don.
While I complain about having to do someone else's work instead of my own, I can't say I didn't enjoy myself. It was a beautiful day out. I was working with wood creating something. I enjoyed the commeradery. A couple neighbors popped their heads in briefly, one to pick up a form for the key to the boat ramp, another to show me a K98 he scored.
And I did hear my Merc 35 run albeit afterwards and briefly...even though the carb job went sour.

And I don't stop working on boats when I leave the shop.......
But I do complain about it at times

Re: Neighbors and Favors

I have pretty good neighbors. To my left is a K-9 cop. He's had stuff stored in my basement for a couple years now. No problem. It's not in my way. We loan each other stuff from time to time. To my right is an older couple. They're good neighbors. We're cordial, but don't speak much. Two houses to the left is a fellow boater. He's always interested in what I'm working on. Super nice guy. We help each other. Across the street is another good one. He's retired so he's home most of the time. He saw some people eyeballing stuff in my garage once and ran them off for me.:D He also restores old trucks. He's my go to guy for specialized tools. They all think a lot of me and vice-versa. I try not to be the guy that only talks to them when he needs something.

I'd rather dig ditches for any of them than work on their computers though.

I think that's one thing that bothers me about this particular fellow. He's the son-in-law of a neighbor - lives 4 miles away. I only see him when he wants something. He either needs something done in the wood shop or to use the ramp key.

I have great neighbors cop one side and retired guy on the other side. The cop has great stories and the retired guy is always worried about how he is going to live with his wife once she retires. He said he would get a job when she retires so he can get away during the day. I will help if needed but don't get asked much.

Its nice to have good neighbors. We were lucky for the longest time and then ended up with some bad ones for awhile but now were back to good ones only.

Re: Neighbors and Favors

I just spoke to my neighbor to the south of me this evening for the first time since the winter hiatus. Door to door is about 100 yards. We hadn't spoken since winter hit. Caught up on a few things and shot the bull.

Another thread here about the kid and the bb in the eye brought this to mind.
The neighbor has a big boxer/pit bull mix dog. Nice enough dog but it's not MY DOG and when the dog was still a pup I'd give him a a pop from my bb gun to sting him and let him know where home was when he was on my property. I'd always wait till the dog was side view so I wouldn't accidently hit him in the face or eye.
Anyway, I told my neighbor then what I was doing and he replied,"Fine. No problem."

Well this afternoon he told me that whenever the dog acts up or wanders all he does is SHOW the dog a bb rifle and the dog is back on the straight and narrow.
He thanked me for training his dog!!

Re: Neighbors and Favors

I've always been lucky, and had good neighbors. If they needed a favor it was always "When you have some time would you come over an take a look at this?"

One neighbor at my last house didn't know which end of a hammer to use to drive a screw, so I'd be over there fairly often doing one thing or another. As I got older and smarter, I'd have him do the repair and just watch to make sure it was done correctly. After a few years he was doing the repairs without calling me.

One of my friends used to do some repairs for a single older gentleman that lived across the street. Shortly after the gentleman passed away my friend was contacted by a lawyer. Turns out his neighbor didn't have any relatives and as repayment for the repairs and friendship he willed his house to my friend.

Re: Neighbors and Favors

Living on the coast as we do, neighbors help eachother. Many of the houses on our street are owned by people who don't live there full time. When the tides get high, we raise their boats. When there is a threat of a tropical storm or hurricane we help them get their boats out of the water or if they can't make it down in time, turn off their power, water and gas for them.

If our dog runs off, the neighbors will track him and bring him home. When an ambulance shows up at someone's door, we all go to their house and see if we can be of help.

When they need to borrow a tool, we let them. If they're are doing something that requires two hands, we lend a hand.

There is no such thing as not helping a neighbor where we live, we all depend on eachother heavily.

Post Hurricane Ike only reinforces what I've told you. We've all helped eachother cleanup and rebuild.

Re: Neighbors and Favors

I cant complain about my neighbors at all. Neighbor to the north of me set me up with the land I built my house on and we swap labor, tools and beer all the time. Neighbor to the south is actually an old employer I worked for when I was in high school. He's gotten where he can get out, go and do like he use to so the north neighbor and I help him with his place. Neighbor across the road.......he's a prince of a fellow....she is another story. When my son was young and living at home, him and all his buddies called her the Blair Witch Project. Go figure that one.

All in all I've got good ones.
