Re: Nerf bars??

The first ones on my truck were Smittybilt, which is a name brand. They had a one year warranty on the powdercoat.(The chrome ones had a 6 month warranty, yet cost nearly twice as much,) The powder coat peeled off in sheets in less than 5 years. By about the 8th year, they had rusted from the inside out and nearly fell of the truck.

My second set are now nearly 6 years old and some no name brand I got off eBay. The finish still looks great and show no signs of rust.

Re: Nerf bars??

Nerf bars are body protection bars that mount under your rockers to your frame to protect the body.

Lots of companies call their steps nerf bars but they are only tube steps.

Seems to be the same companies that sell sport bars and light bars that LOOK like roll bars but are only for looks.

The difference is strength and how they mount.

A step like the one Pony has will bend if you high center your truck on it a nerf bar will not. (got the same ones)

Seems your really just looking for a good step not off road protection.

I love mine. I would definitely go chrome or stainless. All the painted ones I've seen have been rusted BAD. Mine have been on a while and with a little chrome polish they shine up like new. I have the Westin brand ones.

Re: Nerf bars??

I just threw a brand new set of Westins for a 4 door Tahoe in the dumpster a couple of months ago. The ex-OL bought them for her vehicle and I never got them put on. She's gone and so is the vehicle. I tried to sell them several different ways. I couldn't even get a call for them priced at 50 bucks. I got tired of looking at them and tossed them in the green box.

You just said exactly what i was going to say. Kinda the difference between a light bar and a role bar in the back of your truck.

I sell them for a living, and we call the bars on the side Nerf bars, the flat ones running boards, and the small bars on the from bull bars, and the complete guards, grille guards. Or since we are in MT, if you have a big enough one, we call them deer slayers.

If you are looking for a decent inexpensive bar, I would check out www.bigcountryauto.com They have a lifetime warranty on thier polished SS bars. I install a ton of these, and I have never had any come back for rust or anything. These guys actually supply Westin with thier bars, and then Westin charges a lot more for them. You should be able to find a local dealer from thier website, or you may be able to order from them directly.
