72 65Hspr. Evinrude.Using electric starter diagnosis, and am at the point of probing the B side of the safety switch with the motor in neutral gear. Have to take control box apart and can't put the gear into neutral. There are 5 wires leading to the neutral switch, and they are behind the switch so it has to be taken off to check it. The wires are 2 white, one green, one purple, and one orange. Got power coming in. How do you check power leaving the switch.
Thanks
Skip

Re: Neutral safety switch

The white wires pertain to the safety switch portion of what is actually the Hydro Electric Shift switch that you are describing.

You don't say whether you're having a shift problem or a electric starting problem.

However, voltage leaving the switch can easily be checked with a Circuit Tester.... a sharp pointed tool that contains a bulb which has a wire leading from it with a alligator clip attached to it. Grounding the clip and probing the wires would cause the tool to light up if voltage exists.

The actual voltage would require a voltmeter.

Skip, if you are not aware of it, the control will be in neutral but the gear case will still stay in forward gear until the engine is started.

Re: Neutral safety switch

Two shift wires, blue and green. 12v+ to the green for Neutral, 12v+ to Both green and blue for Reverse. It's automatically in Forward until the shift solenoid(s) actuate a valve. The motor has to be running for oil pressure to move the shift mechanism. The orange is probably faded red for 12v+.

Not that that has to do with your starting problem. But three of the wires from that switch go for switching gears. The two white ones are for the neutral safety switch and shouldn't be connected with the shift wires except maybe for backfeed thru the motor. Disconnect the main harness at the motor for testing unless you have the switch itself disconnected.

Power goes to the ignition switch (red/purple), out of the Start terminal to either white on the shift/neutral safety switch, then to the start solenoid which jumps the battery lead to the starter lead.

Re: Neutral safety switch

Using Electric Starter Circuit Diagnosis from Iboat forum and with your help using a voltmeter have gone through all the steps successfully until the last one(Jumper Wire between no 2 on solonoid to negative ground) Positive to battery and negative to solonoid or the negative on the ignition switch produced no reading. The wire is new and the connections are clean. Any further check to pinpoint this problem.
Thanks,
Skip

Skip. You would do better if you didn't start a new thread but replied to your original thread. You have already confused some folks.

Re: Neutral safety switch

Sorry, my fault. Won't happen again. Didn't get a reply on this one, that's why I gave it a shot, even though this thread gave a more thorough picture of what is happening.
Skip
