I have the manual with the parts breakdown .it just says neutral safty switch with an arrow but does not point to any thing specific just behind unit. but I do not have access to the rear of the control.

Don's right fella's, not adjustable, though I have had to tighten a couple of loose ones. It's easy to find. Look for the two yellow wires with the red stripes that go into the controller. They attach to the switch.

You are going to have to remove the controller from the boat. With the shift lever in neutral...
Start by removing the throttle only button. It pry's out. Under there is a bolt with a hole in the center, remove that, it allowes the handle to be removed. Remove the handle carefully and note how the wires are wrapped around the base. These are your trim wires. They have to be put back in like that or when you shift you will cut them. Once the handle is out, flip it over and remove the screw holding on the red release lever, dont lose the spring. Then take the screw(s) out holding the upper plastic handle cover if equiped. Then push the trim button out. If the handle on yours is metal (older) just push the trim button out so you can feed it thru the bottom of the handle.
Now remover the cover. (says commander 3000 on it)
Once that is done, remove the bolts holding the plate against the side panel and pull that over the trim wires.
Before you remove the last bolt support the control box behind the panel, as these bolts also hold it in.
Then work the control box out to where you can reach it without bending the shift cables too sharply.
Piece of cake.

I posted a link to the manual. It shows step by step how to take it apart. You have to figure out how to get it out of your particular boat, as they are all different. But the instructions are there.

Good post havasu, But you for got one step:)

The only way you can remove the neutral button with out breaking it is you need to push the center button in, And lift the red handle, Then go to W O T. Then pry the button out from the back side of the button head with something like a small flat bladed screw driver. Try not to damage the paint on the shifter while prying it out. Then go to neutral, You will then need a 11/16 socket to R&R the center nut. The nut should have lock tite on it already, But you should add a little more while putting it back on. I believe the specks is [150] inch pounds. When your done just push the button back in while it's in neutral. That is a insiders trick that I should have not really told anyone so the service shops out there can stay busy in these hard time.:eek::)

PS, Havasuboatman just so you know the insider statement was not toward you, Sorry if you took it like that, Just meant it in general is all:redface::)

Just like it explains in the manual, and the socket needed is a 5/8

Ok, make that 99% wrong.

Was the bushings missing or damaged that would give it enough slop to move those 4 teeth? If so, it could happen again.
